Fireside Chat of Fahrenheit 451 Fireside Chat of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 Thursday, February 13 at 7:00 pm Decorah continues to heat up with another community event centered around Ray Bradbury’s classic novel, Fahrenheit 451. Kate Rattenborg, owner of Dragonfly Books, is leading a fireside chat on Thursday, February 13 at 7:00 pm at Dragonfly Books. We won’t be burning books to stay warm; however we’ll sit next to the fireplace, sip some hot tea, and chat about Bradbury’s classic novel.
Latham Furniture is donating the use of a fireplace for the perfect fireside chat ambiance. We’ll have an open discussion about Bradbury’s picture of the future, media in our culture, censorship, and much more. All views are welcome, no literary criticism experience needed. Whether you’re a first-time reader of Fahrenheit 451 or a long time fan, stop in for a fun evening of conversation and ideas.
Community members and Decorah students alike are encouraged to read the book and participate in the discussion of Bradbury’s most well-known and controversial literary work. Fahrenheit 451 has been acclaimed and criticized for the last 60 years since it was first published in 1953. Bradbury’s novel tells the story of Guy Montag, a fireman in a world where firemen start fires, printed books are illegal, and televised media permeates all aspect of daily life. Montag eventually finds himself working with others to memorize literary works in an effort to save them.
Have you ever considered which creative work you would be willing to memorize in order to save it from permanent destruction? In a collaborative effort, Dragonfly Books and Preus Library are teaming up to create a mural that will be displayed in Luther’s Center for Faith and Life during Aquila Theatre’s performance of Fahrenheit 451 on Friday, February 21. Stop by Dragonfly Books, fill out your “Commit to Memory” pledge, and add it to the mural currently displayed in Dragonfly Books’ front window. There is a similar mural on campus in Preus Library. These separate pieces will be merged in the CFL on the day of the performance. Be a part of the art!
This fireside chat on Thursday, February 13 at 7:00 pm is sponsored by Dragonfly Books at 112 W. Water Street, Decorah and is free and open to the public. In addition, be sure to get your tickets for Aquila Theatre’s performance of Fahrenheit 451 as part of Luther College’s Center Stage Series.

| Breve biografia | Dati dalle informazioni generali inglesi. Modifica per tradurlo nella tua lingua. In a career spanning more than seventy years, Ray Bradbury, who died on June 5, 2012, at the age of 91, inspired generations of readers to dream, think, and create. A prolific author of hundreds of short stories and close to fifty books, as well as numerous poems, essays, operas, plays, teleplays, and screenplays, Bradbury was one of the most celebrated writers of our time. His groundbreaking works include Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, Dandelion Wine, and Something Wicked This Way Comes. He wrote the screen play for John Huston's classic film adaptation of Moby Dick, and was nominated for an Academy Award. He adapted sixty-five of his stories for television's The Ray Bradbury Theater, and won an Emmy for his teleplay of The Halloween Tree. He was the recipient of the 2000 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the 2004 National Medal of Arts, and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation, among many honors.
Throughout his life, Bradbury liked to recount the story of meeting a carnival magician, Mr. Electrico, in 1932. At the end of his performance Electrico reached out to the twelve-year-old Bradbury, touched the boy with his sword, and commanded, "Live forever!" Bradbury later said, "I decided that was the greatest idea I had ever heard. I started writing every day. I never stopped." | |
