Bradbury è un grande scrittore-e-basta, più che un autore di fantascienza, anche se per un grande romanzo di fantascienza (Fahrenheit 451 che è anche un cult per gli amanti della lettura) è noto davvero a chiunque. Questi racconti sono dei più vari, qualcuno più orientato al versante fantasy, qualcuno strettamente realista. Hanno in comune una grandissima capacità di raccontare storie e persone, e di capirle e farcele sentire. Tutti belli, alcuni incredibilmente belli, come il racconto che dà il titolo alla raccolta: una storia che potrebbe essere tranquillamente raccontata oggi, con la stessa disperante delicatezza (certo, a essere grandissimo poeta e narratore). O l'agghiacciante Gioco d'ottobre in cui l'autore ti porta dentro la testa del mostro con tale maestria che lo capisci tardi, ma tardi, e resti con un mare di dolore e di compassione dentro.

Avvertiamo subito che degli undici racconti qui riuniti da Bradbury per la prima volta in volume soltanto quattro ("La bottiglia Azzurra", "Angelo guarda il futuro", "Un pezzo di legno" e "Breve storia del Quarto Reich") sono di fantascienza in senso stretto. Due ("In trappola" e "I miracoli di Jamie") sono piuttosto di fantasy, mentre un altro ("Gioco d'ottobre") è piuttosto di horror. Ma come classificare i quattro che rimangono? Non li classifichiamo. Ricordiamo invece il giudizio che Kingsley Amis dette di Bradbury nel 1960: "Un autore di fantascienza con un'ampiezza di visione che eccede il campo della fantascienza". E' un giudizio che questo nuovo volume, a diciassette anni di distanza, conferma a ogni racconto e a ogni pagina.
