R. Chetwynd-Hayes (1919–2001)

Not one of his best in my opinion. Still some wonderful moments, memorable characters and great writing but I ended up disappointed at the end of each part. That something special just wasn't there. An unusual misfire from a great author.

This is a good collection of ghost stories and superstitions from Wales, though by no means scholarly. There are tales of terror from Welsh authors (Arthur Machen being the author best known to me), excerpts from old folklore accounts (including ghost stories), and brief tidbits of information on types of goblins and other faerie-type folk. I'd give it 3.5 stars really, rather than 4, but it is an enjoyable read.

In this book Mr Chetwynd Hayes knows how to tell a good story. The stories range from the truly horrific to the really funny all in a classic English style. Some stories combine the horrific with the funny. Truly, in this book the author deserves his title, 'prince of chill'.

This is a collection of four stories placed between 1850 to 2000, all taking place in the English manor of Clavering Grange, then later, after the house has been destroyed, its grounds. The stories are linked together by place, but also, each has a young woman used as a conduit to something evil.
To say that Chetwynd-Hayes writes about ghosts and vampires, or an evil presence, doesn't do him justice. These stories are full of the unexpected. It's a shame the cover art is so cheesy.
