- Charles Laughton was a star in his native England before coming to the USA, where he became one of Hollywood's most popular and respected actors. He made his New York stage debut in "Payment Deferred" (1931) and soon after won the Academy Award for Best Actor for "The Private Life of Henry VIII" (1933). Among his roles were Captain Bligh in "Mutiny on the Bounty" (1935), and Quasimodo in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1939). He directed only one film, "The Night of the Hunter" (1955), which was dismissed by critics at the time but has since been considered a classic. Laughton also worked with Bertolt Brecht to edit and translate into English Brecht's play Galileo, and played the title role at the play's US premiere in Los Angeles in 1947.

The Night of the Hunter di Charles Laughton
This film, while certainly watchable, is just too contrived to deserve the greatness that has been bestowed upon it. Way too preachy--and I don't mean Mitchum's character! Great performances by the child actors, however, and by most of the adults. But Shelley Winters religious "rebirth" or whatever you want to call it is just ridiculous, and it isn't a good performance. Lilian Gish is saddled with the oh-too-precious lines toward the end of the film, which are almost too much to bear. But I do appreciate her skill with a shotgun.… (altro)
½A mad "preacher" is after money that two kids have hidden.
Powerfully suspenseful and visually beautiful. Mitchum's preacher is one of the scariest movie characters of all time. It's a strange movie, combining expressionist horror and noir crime thiller - taking the best from both worlds without much regard for the audience's expectations. I appreciated and enjoyed it a lot more the second time around.
