Bernard Albert Wrightson was born in Dundalk, Maryland on October 27, 1948. He learned comic book art from studying comics and from correspondence courses. His first published work, The Man Who Murdered Himself, appeared in House of Mystery, from DC, in 1969. He helped create the popular DC Comics mostra altro character Swamp Thing, who first appeared in an issue of House of Secrets in 1971. Swamp Thing was promoted to his own series in 1972. In 1974, Wrightson began working at Warren Publishing, where his work, including original material and adaptations of stories by Edgar Allan Poe and H. P. Lovecraft, appeared in Creepy and Eerie magazines. In 1983, he adapted Mary Shelley's Frankenstein for Marvel Comics. He also contributed character designs for films, including creatures, aliens and ghouls for The Mist, Galaxy Quest, and the original Ghostbusters. Stephen King's Creepshow : a George A. Romero film di Stephen King

It was retro three decades ago, and it’s barely aged a day; a ghoulishly good time when paired with its film counterpart.

Swamp Thing: Dark Genesis di Len Wein

Like a lot of people, I first got acquainted with Swamp Thing in the 80s when the older stuff was hard to find. Catching up with it now, it seems like something from way more than 10 years earlier, old-fashioned in both good and bad ways. The good: Wein had a solid grasp of several pulp genres and hit on a premise that could be adapted to any of them, while also being perfect for morbid young people who felt like monsters, and Wrightson's art (though it's sometimes a little clumsier than I expected—he was pretty young) has Gothic style to spare and also a great cartoony expressiveness that recalls some of the EC greats. The bad: Wein writes in a time-honored tradition of endless bombastic narration that's constantly telling you what you're looking at, and the recurring human characters are pretty forgettable. Although it would take a while for them to figure out what to make the story about besides a series of one-off monster encounters, Swamp Thing at this point is already obviously a great idea and you can see all kinds of weird notions being thrown on the wall to see what sticks.

Bernie Wrightson, Master of the Macabre di Bernie Wrightson

A great collection of older Wrightson shorts from various sources. My only quibble is with the uneven colouring job done on these.

I'm a sucker for anything Wrightson, having fallen deeply in love with his linework the first time I picked up that Swamp Thing collection of the first three issues he did with Len Wein. Since then, I've gone out of my way to collect anything that has his work, with my favourite being his illustrations that accompany Mary Shelley's text in the illustrated Frankenstein book.

I must say, I do prefer Wrightson's stories in this collection when he was both writing and illustrating. Second would be the wonderful Poe and Lovecraft adaptations he did.

Well worth your time.… (altro)
