Hubby signed me up for this (Thank you!!). Over the years I have received over 90 installments (some with two or three books), and I haven't read all the books yet. Not even close! Ummm...obviously I need to work on this category next year...
Let me know if any books interest you (ones I haven't read yet)! Beth, Ellen, Stasia and Paul are in for at least some of the ones listed below.
2022 Challenge
January -- Red Clocks by Leni Zumas
Other 2022 potential reads....

The Blazing World by Siri Hustvedt
A Constellation of Vital Phenomena by Anthony Marra
The Heart's Invisible Furies by John Boyne

I can't resist buying books!!
I seem to manage to read around 50% of my newbies, except in 2019 where I (ahem) added a few more books to my collection than normal. But then in 2020 I killed it and read almost 75% of my newbies!!
2017 47/85
2018 45/88
2019 45/128
2020 78/103
Let's see how I do this year...

So I finished The Guilty (🎧 3.5 hours) by James Patterson. It's a short one about a famous playwright and something that happens on stage. An all-star cast does the audio -- I don't usually like multiple audio voices, but this one is very well done. 3.5

From Audible: Tonight, Osmond Box, the reclusive yet wildly successful writer/director known for his completely surprising Broadway plays, is debuting his seventh and most highly anticipated production of his career: The Guilty. Nothing is known as about the story, the setting, the premise, or even the actors involved. The first people to discover the truth will be the lucky ones sitting in those seats opening night. Phones are collected; doors are locked. The rest of the world eagerly awaits the first reviews....
Two hours later, when the doors are finally allowed to open, half of the audience will be applauding wildly. The other half will be fleeing the theater in mortal terror. Has Osmond Box done it again? Or has he done something far, far worse?

And I am actually in the Ss, but I had hoped to finish by the end of the year and that's fast approaching. Hmmm....
I'll try to remember the yellow sticky note next time I post a pic though! ; )

Happy New thread, Kimmers! LOVE the Beacon Rock topper. Wow! I am glad to see you are enjoying Cerulean Sea. Hooray for having Doc queued up. I should join you on Hench. I have had that one saved on my Kindle, since RD & Joe were raving about it. When do you think you would start it?

Happy new thread TwinK! We need to hike on my next Portland trip! I love the photo. I would be up for a shared indispensable read next year, to keep you at it. :)
Happy Thanksgiving. I am thankful for you, so take care.

Hi Kim, and happy new thread! Beautiful topper.
>12 Berly: I just read the first of the Kopp Series in a shared read with alcottacre. I have the second on my shelves, just waiting for the right time. It’s a long wait for the next Cormoran Strike, I’m afraid.
Happy Thanksgiving. I know I’m thankful for a bit more than usual now, but am always thankful for LT and friends like you.

Happy new thread, Kim ... and Happy Thanksgiving coming right up. Hope you and the family have a lovely party, safely in a warm garage :)

Have you all a happy Thanksgiving, Kim and family.
Ours is being a three-day festival this year, in part to accommodate the field hockey player and her driver, who must be in Richmond, VA, at 9 a.m. Friday. That's a six hour drive from here. So Thanksgiving dinner for my family on Wednesday at my son's house, who is both principal chef and the hockey chauffeur. Thanksgiving on Thanksgiving at my house for my brother and his wife with my daughter and me. And day-before cooking commencing to begin this afternoon.
Yippie!
And I just finished book #99.

Had to go to three stores to find raisins and never did find canned whole cranberry, just the jelly kind, so I bought a bit of whole cranberry with the sugar already in it. Added my spices and it's close to my recipe and will have to do. No room in the fridge, so I'll make the potatoes tomorrow. LOL

A Thanksgiving to Friends (Lighting the Way)
In difficult times
a friend is there to light the way
to lighten the load,
to show the path,
to smooth the road
At the darkest hour
a friend, with a word of truth
points to light
and the encroaching dawn
is in the plainest sight.

The smell of this process is indescribably piercing and drives my family out of the house. The result is fabulous.

Interesting takes on cranberry sauce. Walnuts, spices, et al sounds most interesting. I always do cranberry-raspberry sauce and we all love it. It couldn't be easier and adds a nice sweet note to the meal...but walnuts, spices, etc...do you have a recipe Jim?

Christmas Party aka "Envious Casca" (K 402 pages) by Georgette Heyer 2.5
I think I prefer Heyer's romances over her mysteries. And I liked them better when I was a teen. This one had annoying characters and a predictable ending. Ah well. At least it was the right season!
95Berly
Fledgling (B 310 pages) by Octavia Butler 4.5
Loved this take on Vampires! And what it means to be different. I only wished Butler had lived long enough to write more on this character.
Fledgling is the story of an apparently young, amnesiac girl whose alarmingly inhuman needs and abilities lead her to a startling conclusion: She is in fact a genetically modified, 53-year-old vampire. Forced to discover what she can about her stolen former life, she must at the same time learn who wanted—and still wants—to destroy her and those she cares for and how she can save herself. Fledgling is a captivating novel that tests the limits of “otherness” and questions what it means to be truly human.
96BLBera
I've loved all the books by Butler that I've read, TwinK! I am not a big fan of vampire books, but I might give this one a try.
Cranberries, cooked with some sugar, are perfect. I did make a pretty tasty buttermilk cranberry pie this year. No nuts in the cranberries!

Happy newish thread, Kim. I should have checked in earlier when more pictures were available. There were two of your hike left so I got some idea.
I agree with you about the Heyer mysteries. Not nearly as fun as her romances. I've pulled one of her histories off the shelf, An Infamous Army. Will see how that goes.

A pretty decent murder mystery with enough ties to Jane Eyre to make it interesting. Parts of it where a tad unbelievable, but I enjoyed the multiple character viewpoints. 3.5
In a modern and twisty retelling of Jane Eyre, a young woman must question everything she thinks she knows about love, loyalty, and murder.
Jane has lost everything: job, mother, relationship, even her home. A friend calls to offer an unusual deal―a cottage above the crashing surf of Big Sur on the estate of his employer, Evan Rochester. In return, Jane will tutor his teenage daughter. She accepts.
But nothing is quite as it seems at the Rochester estate. Though he’s been accused of murdering his glamorous and troubled wife, Evan Rochester insists she drowned herself. Jane is skeptical, but she still finds herself falling for the brilliant and secretive entrepreneur and growing close to his daughter.
And yet her deepening feelings for Evan can’t disguise dark suspicions aroused when a ghostly presence repeatedly appears in the night’s mist and fog. Jane embarks on an intense search for answers and uncovers evidence that soon puts Evan’s innocence into question. She’s determined to discover what really happened that fateful night, but what will the truth cost her?

>126 msf59: Had a great weekend and gearing up for another. Mission for this one is to find a Christmas tree and get it up and decorated. We are skipping the hike this weekend because I got a cortisone knee injection this week and I am supposed to take it easy for a few days. So instead, we are going to go on a drive somewhere and have dinner out. So, I still get a date with Hubby!

A Town Called Solace by Mary Lawson 4.0
Wonderful, flawed characters in a small, quaint town. A missing child, a new neighbor, a broken marriage and lots of love. The writing is not very sophisticated (much of it is told from the viewpoint of an eight-year-old girl), but the ideas beneath it are quite wonderful and I enjoyed the different narrators. Teared up once or twice. ; ) Thank you for the BB Laurelkeet!

The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune 4.5
Another great read! An eclectic cast of characters, most of them magical, in an isolated orphanage under review for suspected violations. These kids are all different, some potentially dangerous and the townspeople are wary of them. But even the most "normal" among them, the inspector, is not at peace. Can any of them find a way to be true to themselves, be accepted, find love and family? Though these characters are magical, their struggles remind me of the problems we face today in real life. I don't mean to make this book sound dark, because it is filled with quirky humor and lovable characters. This book is about what we need: trust, love, respect, encouragement, honoring diversity, and joy. Recommended. And perfect for #75!

Kay Hengeveld’s Cranberry SaladObviously leave the pecans out… We do not need 911 calls.
1 lb cranberries sorted, washed, and coarsely chopped
1 6-oz package cherry or raspberry jello
¼ - ½ cup sugar
1 cup chopped pecans
1 cup chopped celery
1 small orange, seeded and ground (include peel)
1 20-oz can crushed pineapple, drained
¾ c boiling water
2 T lemon juice
Combine jello, water, sugar if desired, and lemon juice and chill ‘til partially set. Add everything else and put into a 9-cup mold or 9 x 13 pan. Chill until set. Makes 15-20 servings.

Now we just have to fix all the bulbs that are out and put up the lights and ornaments!!

Hi Kim, congrats on reaching 75 books! And with a good one, too - my daughter Marina and I loved that one. I've now been hit multiple times by A Town Called Solace and I was already a Mary Lawson fan, so... hit again.
I can't see any of your hike pictures. I suspect it may be the school wifi that is protecting me from potentially dangerous images (or at least trying to prevent me from walking out the door to do a hike of my own). I'll try again when I'm at home (eating lunch at my desk now).
Late to the cranberry party, but I make a cranberry salsa that has ginger and orange and lime and serrano and rum and that is now a family favorite. Several years ago I messed up and tried a new cranberry recipe - something sweet and stewed with bourbon that sounded amazing but the disappointment in no cranberry salsa was so acute that I ended up making it that weekend and have never varied from what is clearly now a required dish.

I forgot to tell you that you hit me with Why Was the Partridge in the Pear Tree. I love Christmas carols and have worked in the performing arts for so long that I'm pretty sure I know every single one, but perhaps not their origin. Once at my husband's company party at a trivia night one category of question was Christmas carols and my team was glad to have me, even though my knowledge of them is considered freakish by normal people:)
I am very happy to share the cranberry salsa recipe! I can't really call it mine, as it was published in The Denver Post probably at least 25 years ago, but I have adapted and simplified it over the years and we still love it. It calls for four serrano peppers. People I've shared the recipe with over the years have called me to ask if I'm sure about the number of serranos because they're really hot, but yes, somehow it creates heat but not too much. My daughters are heat-averse but snarf down the salsa. Maybe the cranberries neutralize? It would be a good chemistry study. For someone else:) I do wear gloves to prepare them, and when I haven't, regretted it bitterly. The ingredients call for many things to be finely chopped, but one of the modifications I have made over the years is to use the food processor, which you have to do anyway to finely chop the cranberries - not a task that is even possible, I would think, with a knife. So I start with the ginger and peppers cut roughly and then blitz in the food processor, then adding the cranberries and cilantro.
Colorado Cranberry Salsa
2 heaping tablespoons peeled, finely minced fresh ginger
4 fresh serrano peppers, seeded and finely chopped
1 bunch cilantro, leaves plucked and finely chopped
1 bag (12 oz) fresh cranberries, rinsed and picked over
1 orange - you will need the juice and the zest
2 limes - you will need the juice of both and the zest of one
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons rum
I begin by peeling and roughly chopping the ginger. Blitz in the food processor with the roughly chopped, seeded serranos. Add the cilantro leaves and the cranberries. If you don't have a fine-zester and your orange and lime zest is thick or long, then blitz that also. If it's fine, you can add it in the next step. Everything should be finely chopped.
Transfer food processor contents to a bowl and add the lime and orange zest if you didn't already, the orange and lime juice, the sugar, and the rum. Mix well and allow the flavors to blend. I typically make this on Wednesday (day before Thanksgiving). It is the most beautiful color on a plate and is amazing with turkey, mashed potatoes, etc.
Enjoy!

Shadow Tag by Louise Erdrich 3.75
This is a powerful book. The main characters have a love/hate relationship and I found the abusive marriage hard to take. I also think that the kids could have been developed a bit more. I did enjoy how the sections of the book kept getting shorter and shorter, so I was expecting some kind of blow-out ending, but I didn't predict the one that happened. Interesting take on artist and their subjects and I really liked the title, Shadow Tag, and the how references to shadows carried throughout the book: giving the feeling of depth in paintings, standing still at high noon and having no shadow, being caught in the shadows, or lost in the shadow of genius, etc.
196lauralkeet
>195 Berly: That sounds interesting, Kim. I recently finished reading Erdrich's Love Medicine novels and have also read a couple of her newer ones. I'm on the library list for her latest, The Sentence. So I guess I'm an Erdrich fan LOL. And my library has Shadow Tag, so I've made a note of it for future hold requests.

>196 lauralkeet: I am reading The Sentence for January bookclub!! Maybe we can read it together.
>197 msf59: Shadow Tag is not my favorite of Erdrich's. I usually rate her books in the 4's, but 3.75 isn't bad!! I started Hench, but I am only 3% in according to my Kindle tracker.

>198 Whisper1: Hello you!! I hope you enjoy a little Christmas carol history. : ) Today was a great day and I hope the same was true for you. I actually went to TKD with my nephew, so a lower class than mine, but still, I was able to do some basic sparring techniques with no hip pain for the first time in months!! Hurray!! And, of course, I wanted to go back again later tonight for my black belt class, but the smarter side of me won out and I abstained and just lived with my small victory.

>199 BLBera: Shadow Tag is definitely one of her darker ones, for me. But she is still an amazing writer and storyteller and there were several elements of the story that I really enjoyed.
>200 richardderus: Me too! Smooches. I am barely keeping up on my thread lately, so I will make the rounds one of these days. Tonight was TKD. Tomorrow, Thursday and Sunday we are having our Holiday Cheese Parties (with mostly family each night to separate the crowds). And Wednesday is Zoom bookclub. Whew!!
And what you may ask is a Holiday Cheese Party? LOL. My hubby started this years ago. We take various kinds of cheese and write up a small blurb about each one, funny stories or historical background, methods of production, etc. And then we print those out and attach them to the cheese and wrap them up in Christmas paper and put them under the tree. Each person get to choose a random wedge, unwrap it, read the info and then we taste them! It was our effort to expand our children's palettes and have some fun. It is such a hit that their friends still ask US when we are going to have the parties and can they come! Yum.

>201 weird_O: Hurray for books to open!! With or without the tree. : ) And the man 'n' cheese sounds yummy. Good luck with the wrapping. I am all caught up...for now. Until the crush of shipments arrive the day before Christmas, as is most likely. Sigh.
>202 alcottacre: Happy Monday!! I am glad I read Shadow Tag, particularly with you and Paul. : ) Sorry it hit so close tot home. : ( Not going to be a reread for me either, but then I don't do too much of that anyhow.

So, I am about 1/3 of the way into Hench and I am enjoying it! It's strange and fun.
Anna does boring things for terrible people because even criminals need office help and she needs a job. Working for a monster lurking beneath the surface of the world isn’t glamorous. But is it really worse than working for an oil conglomerate or an insurance company? In this economy?
As a temp, she’s just a cog in the machine. But when she finally gets a promising assignment, everything goes very wrong, and an encounter with the so-called “hero” leaves her badly injured. And, to her horror, compared to the other bodies strewn about, she’s the lucky one.
So, of course, then she gets laid off.
With no money and no mobility, with only her anger and internet research acumen, she discovers her suffering at the hands of a hero is far from unique. When people start listening to the story that her data tells, she realizes she might not be as powerless as she thinks.
Because the key to everything is data: knowing how to collate it, how to manipulate it, and how to weaponize it. By tallying up the human cost these caped forces of nature wreak upon the world, she discovers that the line between good and evil is mostly marketing. And with social media and viral videos, she can control that appearance.
It’s not too long before she’s employed once more, this time by one of the worst villains on earth. As she becomes an increasingly valuable lieutenant, she might just save the world.
A sharp, witty, modern debut, Hench explores the individual cost of justice through a fascinating mix of Millennial office politics, heroism measured through data science, body horror, and a profound misunderstanding of quantum mechanics.

>211 Berly: Is that where The Auditor makes an appearance?
I so loved that read.
>205 Berly: I love that! What a great way to make the palate expansion fun and festive. I'm unsurprised that your kids' friends still want to come.

>211 Berly: I have that one in the BlackHole already. Too bad my local library does not have it in any format but e-book. I hope you continue to enjoy the book.
Happy Wednesday, Kim!

I love the idea of a cheese party! You're reminding me about what I liked about Hench. I found it to be such an original premise.

Hi, Kimmers! I am also enjoying Hench. About 25% or just over a 100 pages in. It continues to be clever and unpredictable.

>212 humouress: More please....
>213 richardderus: I had no clue what you were talking about until 10 more pages read and now I know! The Auditor has arrived!
Round Two of Cheese Unwrapping is tonight. : )

>215 Familyhistorian: Hench is a very unique take on the cost of super heroes. Fun! No idea where it is going...
>216 msf59: Exactly!! Thanks for sucking me in to this read.
>217 BLBera: Another potential Henchman!! : )

>218 Berly: That’s Anna’s chosen super-hench name. She only uses it once or twice but it’s quite early on in the book, I thought. Don’t worry; there are no spoilers inherent.

Happy weekend, Kim!

>222 humouress: Yes, it's definitely her super-hench name now. ; )
>223 richardderus: It's the weekend!! Today's mission is to pick up furniture my FIL no longer wants. I am saving the pieces for when the kids need them later on in a bigger lodging.
And then I am going bowling with the leadership team from TKD. I am on the verge of not wanting to be in public again because of the Omicron variant, but we have very few cases here to date, so masking up and going for a strike!
>224 alcottacre: Happy weekend!!! I think my Christmas cards are turning into New Year's cards...oops!

>229 msf59: Finished!! Hench was a great recommendation, Mark. My Kindle version also came with a short story, or perhaps first chapter, about one of the Meats. Really hoping for a sequel.
>230 richardderus: I was well masked. ; ) And I actually had the high score in the third game of bowling!! Not that this is saying much, because I was only mid 100s for a score, but I beat Master Im. Hah!! Or Hi-Ya!! LOL
