James Baldwin was born on August 2, 1924, in New York. Baldwin's father was a pastor who subjected his children to poverty, abuse, and religious fanaticism. As a result, many of Baldwin's recurring themes, such as alienation and rejection, are attributable to his upbringing. Living the life of a mostra altro starving artist, Baldwin went through numerous jobs, including dishwasher, office boy, factory worker, and waiter. In 1948, he moved to France, where much work originated. Baldwin published Go Tell It on the Mountain in 1953. A largely autobiographical work, it tells of the religious awakening of a fourteen-year-old. In addition to his childhood experiences, his experiences as a black man and a homosexual provided inspiration for such works as Giovanni's Room, Nobody Knows My Name, and Another Country. Baldwin holds a distinguished place in American history as one of the foremost writers of both black and gay literature. He was an active participant in the Civil Rights movement. Un romanzo sul mondo dei neri d'America. Batterista jazz per vocazione e mestiere, Rufus si imbarca in un rapporto d'amore con una bianca, una donna del sud più acceso e razzista. Un amore basato sì sulla sfrenatezza dei sensi, ma anche e soprattutto su una scelta libera e spontanea in grado di superare ogni barriera razziale. Ma a poco a poco tra i due si insinua la dolorosa consapevolezza della propria diversità, che porterà Leona alla follia e Rufus a uno squallido vagabondaggio nei più sordidi angoli di New York tra vizio e disperazione.… (altro)
Il primo romanzo di Baldwin, per molti tratti autobiografico, parla della vita di una famiglia dal sud schiavista ad una Harlem in cui l’integrazione è impossibile. La Chiesa Pentecostale, esuberante in ogni suo aspetto, è insieme strumento d’unione di una comunità, ma anche modello negativo in cui la scissione tra “santo” e “peccatore” è tutta la vita di chi la frequenta.
Un libro straordinario, un racconto forte, per molti versi incredibilmente attuale anche se scritto 50 anni fa. La paura di David di accettare la propria sessualità, sullo sfondo di una Parigi in cui tutto sembra essere permesso, fa davvero capire il tormento di una persona che non riesce ad accettare le conseguenze del proprio amore, in una società che ancora non accetta. Certo, molto tempo è passato, ma Baldwin riesce a descrivere con una forza di parole non semplice la paura di amare che tante persone ancora oggi provano di fronte all'accettazione della oro omosessualità.… (altro)
