Iain Banks was born in Fife in 1954 and was educated at Stirling University where he studied English Literature, Philosophy and Psychology. Banks came to widespread and controversial public note with the publication of his first novel, The Wasp Factory, in 1984. His first science fiction novel, mostra altro Consider Phlebas, was published in 1987. He continued to write both mainstream fiction (as Iain Banks) and science fiction (as Iain M. Banks). Banks' mainstream fiction included The Wasp Factory (1984), Walking on Glass (1985), The Bridge (1986), Espedair Street (1987), Canal Dreams (1989), The Crow Road (1992), Complicity (1993), Whit (1995), A Song of Stone (1997), The Business (1999), Dead Air (2002) and The Steep Approach to Garbadale (2007). [La fabbrica delle vespe. Trad. it. Alessandra Di Luzio. Padova: Meridiano zero. 2012. ISBN: 9788882372439. Pagine 235. 3.63€]
Il giovane Frank Culdhame, protagonista di questo romanzo, non lo dimenticherete facilmente. Racconta in prima persona una storia di perversione mentale (non so se il termine esiste nella letteratura clinica, ma dà certamente l’idea), di solitudine, di delirio, di violenza. Fortemente disturbante.
Il romanzo è bellissimo, però, fuori da ogni schema. In una possibile accezione, è un romanzo di genere: lo si potrebbe definire horror, o gotico. E la tentazione è forte, dato che Banks è considerato uno scrittore di genere, e per di più è scozzese. Ma la cosa più imprtante, è che Banks fin dalle prime pagine porta il lettore dentro un mondo – l’isola in cui vive Frank Culdhame e la sua psiche, quasi due facce della stessa realtà – di cui si resta prigionieri fino alla rivelazione finale.
Lo consiglio vivamente, ma vi devo avvertire che è un piatto per stomaci forti. Lo sappiano gli animi sensibili.
Comincio con una digressione. Da qualche tempo ho deciso di segnalare l’eventuale edizione tradotta in italiano di opere che ho letto in lingua originale: a me piace leggere in inglese, e mi tengo anche in allenamento; soprattutto nel caso della letteratura, poi, mi pare che leggere le parole e le frasi come l’autore le ha scritte aumenti di molto il piacere della lettura. Però non tutti sono tenuti a condividere le mie scelte, ci mancherebbe. E quindi considero una cortesia, anzi un servizio fatto a chi fosse incuriosito della mia recensione e volesse leggere il libro in italiano, dargli tutti i riferimenti bibliogarfici del caso. Per farla breve: vado a cercare la traduzione di questo romanzo (inizialmente pubblicato da Fanucci con il titolo La fabbrica degli orrori) e trovo che l’editore si chiama Meridiano Zero. Orrore e sconcerto. Meridiano Zero è stato un movimento neofascista attivo tra il 1991 e il 1993 (come ben sa chi era a Roma in quegli anni), e io non avevo e non ho alcuna voglia di fare pubblicità a un editore fascista. Ma, se ho ben capito, questa è una casa editrice padovana che non ha nulla a che fare con quella sigla dell’estremismo di destra: mi ha rassicurato un articolo di Marco Lodoli, che certo non può essere sospettato di simpatie neofasciste (Marco Lodoli, “Noi microbi ora pubblichiamo Carver“, la Repubblica, 7 dicembre 2007).
The Wasp Factory segna il debutto di Iain Banks, scrittore prolifico che poi ha seguito strade diverse, firmando come Iain M. Banks i suoi romanzi di fantascienza (ne ho letti molti, ma ne ho recensito qui soltanto due, The Algebraist e Matter) e come Iain Banks gli altri. Banks è morto a 59 anni nel 2013.
È difficile scriver del romanzo senza guastarne la lettura, non solo per la trama, ma anche per le atmosfere.
Forse l’unica cosa che sento necessario scrivere è che è un romanzo a chiave – costruito con grandissima sapienza e attenzione ai dettagli – e che, sorprendetemente, la spiegazione finale ha un versante “femminista” che offre molta materia di riflessione.

Scopro ora (ho letto il libro molti mesi fa, anche se lo recensisco soltanto adesso) che mi ero appuntato una sola citazione. Probabilmente dipende dal fatto che è un romanzo che ti prende, che vuoi finire subito, e che non ti lascia nemmeno il tempo di prendere appunti.
