Emma Donoghue was born on October 24, 1969 in Dublin, Ireland. She received her BA degree from the University College Dublin and PhD in English from University of Cambridge. Her first novel was Stir. Her next novel was Hood which won the 1997 American Library Association's Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual mostra altro Book Award for Literature. Her novel Slammerkin was a finalist in the 2001 Irish Times Irish Literature Prize for Fiction. The Sealed Letter, published in 2008, is a work of historical fiction. This work was the joint winner of the 2009 Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Fiction. She continued writing several award winning novels including Room which was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in September 2010. - Born in Dublin, Ireland, in October 1969, I am the youngest of eight children of Frances and Denis Donoghue (the literary critic). I attended Catholic convent schools in Dublin, apart from one eye-opening year in New York at the age of ten. In 1990 I earned a first-class honours BA in English and French from University College Dublin (unfortunately, without learning to actually speak French). I moved to England, and in 1997 received my PhD (on the concept of friendship between men and women in eighteenth-century English fiction) from the University of Cambridge. From the age of 23, I have earned my living as a writer, and have been lucky enough to never have an ‘honest job’ since I was sacked after a single summer month as a chambermaid. After years of commuting between England, Ireland, and Canada, in 1998 I settled in London, Ontario, where I live with Christine Roulston and our son Finn (12) and daughter Una (9).

Quando Ma’ gli rivela dell'esistenza del mondo al di fuori di quella stanza lui non ci crede. Ma quello è solo l'inizio, di un'avventura che lo porterà, grazie ad un astuto stratagemma inventato da Ma', a scappare da Stanza per cercare aiuto. Per far uscire entrambi da quell'incubo lungo anni, fatto di rapimento, stupri, e cattività.
Grazie a Jack, dunque, i due sono finalmente liberi, e possono iniziare un percorso di reintegrazione nel mondo reale. Per Jack è difficile abituarsi a un mondo così grande e pieno di persone, un mondo dove non tutto è suo, nemmeno Ma' sembra più essere solo sua, e dove gli altri si aspettano da lui comportamenti per lui fuori da ogni logica.
Ma’, invece, scopre che riprendersi la vita che così tanto ha desiderato, sia più difficile del previsto, a causa degli anni di soprusi, stupri, e violenze subite.
Insomma, per entrambi abituarsi al mondo normale non è facile. Per Jack perché ha conosciuto solo Stanza, per Ma' perché è difficile togliersi di dosso tutto il dolore e la sofferenza provati. Anche prendersi cura di Jack è estremamente più difficile adesso, perché lui è abituato a stare sempre insieme a lei, sempre vicino e a portata di voce e non riesce a concepire il fatto di doversi a volte allontanare da lei, che invece ha bisogno di spazio per prendersi cura delle sue ferite.
Il fatto che il libro sia narrato dal punto di vista di Jack, poi, lo rende ancora più incredibile, perché riesce a trasportare il lettore nella testa di un bambino, che ama e apprezza tutto quello che ha, anche se il lettore sa che quello che ha è solo un'enorme atrocità.
Lettura consigliata, ricca di spunti di riflessione e di emozioni contrastanti e incredibili.… (altro)
