Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was born in Enugu, Nigeria on September 15, 1977. She studied medicine and pharmacy at the University of Nigeria for a year and a half before moving to the United States, where she studied communication at Drexel University for two years. She received a bachelor's degree in mostra altro communication and political science at Eastern Connecticut State University in 2001, a master's degree in creative writing at Johns Hopkins University, and a master's degree in African Studies from Yale University in 2008. Her first novel, Purple Hibiscus, was published in 2003 and received the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best First Book in 2005. Her other books include The Thing around Your Neck, Americanah, and We Should All Be Feminist. Half of a Yellow Sun won the Orange Prize in 2007. Americanah parla, tra le varie cose, di presunte razze, razzismo più o meno manifesto e immigrazione. Principalmente negli Stati Uniti, dove è ambientato gran parte del romanzo, ma il razzismo è un'erba cattiva che può – e, purtroppo in molti casi, ha – attecchito un po' dovunque.
Ecco, quando ha parlato di razzismo, Adichie ha avuto tutta la mia attenzione e mi ha fatto conoscere una realtà che fino a qui avevo solo sfiorato. Adichie, attraverso la protagonista, Ifemelu, sa come denunciare in maniera diretta la divisione razzista della società americana (e non solo, temo) e di come il razzismo possa entrare viscido e sfuggente anche nella vita della persona che si ritiene più mentalmente aperta.
Purtroppo, però, Americanah non ha mantenuto desta la mia attenzione per quanto riguarda le vicende personali che interessano i vari personaggi, due su tutti Ifemelu e Obinze. Mi sono sentita lontana da loro e ho avuto l'impressione che Adichie si sia concentrata troppo sui temi del romanzo e troppo poco sulla caratterizzazione dei personaggi, che mi sono parsi senza spessore.
In particolare, sono rimasta molto fredda durante lo sviluppo della storia d'amore tra Ifemelu e Obinze, che non mi ha coinvolto per niente. Anzi, mi ha stupito molto il modo in cui è andata a finire (e stupire non penso proprio fosse nelle intenzioni di Adichie).… (altro)
