Erich Maria Remarque was born Erich Paul Remark on June 22, 1898 in Germany. He was drafted into the German Army at the age of 18. He was assigned to the Western Front and later moved to the 15th Reserve Infantry Regiment. He was wounded by shrapnel in the left leg, right arm and neck, and was mostra altro moved to an army hospital in Germany where he spent the rest of the war. After the war, he continued his teacher training and became a primary school teacher. He also began pursuing his writing career. He started writing essays and poems and his first novel, The Dream Room. When he published All Quiet on the Western Front, Remarque changed his middle name in memory of his mother and reverted to the earlier spelling of the family name. The original family name, Remarque, had been changed to Remark by his grandfather in the 19th century. All Quiet on the Western Front was written in 1927, but Remarque was unable to find a publisher. The novel was published in 1929 and described the experiences of German soldiers during World War 1. His other works include: Station at the Horizon, The Road Back, Three Comrades, Flotsam, and Shadows in Paradise. Erich Remarque died in 1958 of heart collapse brought on byan aneurysm. Questo libro non vuol essere
né un atto d'accusa né una confessione.
Esso non è che il tentativo di raffigurare
una generazione la quale – anche se sfuggì alle granate –
venne distrutta dalla guerra.
Fin dalla prima pagine Remarque ci informa di quale sarà l’aspetto della guerra che sarà centrale nel suo romanzo: l’idea secondo la quale non si ritorna mai davvero dalla guerra, che non si limita a distruggere i corpi, ma lacera gli animi, le speranze, i sogni, i futuri. La guerra è un orrore troppo grande per lasciare intere le persone, anche se all’esterno e con i tuoi affetti lontani dal fronte ti presenti integro per non far loro sapere quanto vorresti solo tornare a prima, alla pace, alla beata inconsapevolezza.
E neppure ci potranno capire. Davanti a noi infatti sta una generazione che ha, sì, passato con noi questi anni, ma che aveva già prima un focolare ed una professione, ed ora ritorna ai suoi posti d’un tempo, e vi dimenticherà la guerra; dietro a noi sale un’altra generazione, simile a ciò che fummo noi un tempo; la quale ci sarà estranea e ci spingerà da parte. Noi siamo inutili a noi stessi. Andremo avanti, qualcuno si adatterà, altri si rassegneranno, e molti rimarranno disorientati per sempre; passeranno gli anni, e finalmente scompariremo.
Niente di nuovo sul fronte occidentale è il racconto gentile e delicato di una generazione travolta e stravolta dalla Prima Guerra Mondiale, una guerra diversa da tutte le precedenti, incapace di risparmiare i civili e rispettare qualunque limite.… (altro)
