I've actually started this thread 4 different times and something has always gone wrong and I haven't gotten it finished.

75% of the year is gone and we are way behind on our group goal, so we have some work to do.
So lets try to get some of our ROOTs read this month.

So, let's keep these tickers (password ROOT) moving with everyone adding their progress to the comprehensive goal for all of us. We need to have a total of 4,513 (83%) by the end of OCTOBER to stay on track. This is going to be tough!!
Any members who signed up with a personal goal and have yet to read one ROOT, have been removed from the general totals to a separate list. The group tickers have been adjusted to reflect this change.

Should we move out those readers who signed up and have stopped making progress for more than 6 months - apparently given up?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The ticker thread (http://www.librarything.com/topic/148710) is a
huge help in crunching the end of month numbers so if you haven't already posted your ticker there, please do! if there is a * by your name, it indicates there is a ticker on your thread but not on the ticker thread and a & indicates no ticker. This just tells me where I need to go to get the numbers that are not on the ticker thread. I try to keep up on the personal threads during the month, so having to revisit to gather numbers can be a bit time consuming if the system is slow. Any help is appreciated. So if you have a ticker made already , please think about copying the HTML to the ticker thread.
Thanks for your help!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So, now, Ladies and Gentlemen, BOOKLOVERS - get back out there and read those BOOKS!

Here are the individual numbers so far. Several members reached their goals this month - them we applaud. Please let me know if I need to update anyone. I had a few personal threads I couldn't locate for those not on the ticker thread, so I think I need to find them.

I don't want anyone to think that I am not really proud of the progress that we have made so far. Over 3,000 books have been read toward our group goal and that is phenomenal!! Every book that has been read, whether you had a large goal or a small, has helped us get this far. Let's make a big push on!

I have not yet finished The Invisible Bridge, which was my September ROOT so I have moved it forward to this month as my 1st ROOT for October. It is taking me a while at nearly 800 pages. And I will try for NO library books this month and just pick from my shelves. That should help get my numbers up.

I'm reading Peace Like a River, which has been on my shelves for-almost-ever, and it will be my first ROOT for October. I hope to concentrate on my own shelves this month.

Ott 2, 2013, 10:57 am

I am hoping to get several books out of the house by the end of October, but I am now taking a college course (for credit) and reading for that it taking most of my reading time. None of those books are ROOTS so I can't count them towards my totals. I feel like all I am doing is reading, and I am, but not things I can count. Even so - this year I upped my goal from 25 to 30 and I have managed to make that, so things are not all gloom and doom.

Currently, reading Master Butcher's Singing Club by Louise Erdrich and really like it. Plus two readings by the theorists Michel Foucault. The Erdrich will count as ROOT but the Foucault won't.

Should we move out those readers who signed up and have stopped making progress for more than 6 months - apparently given up?

I offered to drop out of this challenge, but I was convinced not to. My offer still stands. I think that would help your group numbers a bit.

Should we move out those readers who signed up and have stopped making progress for more than 6 months - apparently given up?

Some people seem to be returning after a couple of months. I think we should wait. Or we could sent them a personal message and ask them if they are still in.
I could help with that if it is decided, if you like.

24benitastrnad
Ott 6, 2013, 12:27 pm

I don't think there are any winners or losers in a group like this so think those names should be left on for the rest of the year. I have been reading at a much slower pace this year than in previous years simply because other things are taking precedence.

As for the group statistics - that really isn't all that important to me because I don't see this as a competitive group.

I work this out to mean the average guy reads 5+ books a year. I've read enough ROOTS so far this year for 7 guys. In an average year I read enough books for 20+ guys.

Cyderry asks, if we should "move out those readers who signed up and have stopped making progress for more than 6 months - apparently given up?"

Personally, I don't think we should. I realize we probably won't reach our group goal, but part of the fun is watching the tickers slowly move ahead towards the fairly stable 5.400 volume goal. I would prefer keeping things as they are and see how close we can get.

I find I'm doing something very counter-productive to lightening my bookshelves -- I'm actually buying books with the intention of being able to count them, in the future, as ROOTS (or BOTS or BOMBS or whatever form this challenge takes in future years) rather than trying to get them through ILL and not having them count toward my total.

Isn't it amazing how a person can rationalize out-of-control book buying?

#60 I know what you mean. Astonighingly I developed quite a strong self control on book buying this year, but usually towards the end of the year I tend to get new new books and won't read them but wait unti next year so I can count them towards this challenge... o.O It IS strange how the mind works...

#60 & 63
I know what you mean. I find myself doing the same thing. Not deliberately, but I buy a new book or go to the library to get one for one of the group reads that interests me, and that only forces these books that I own onto the back burner so that I can count them as a ROOT. My current active reads are a book for a group read that won't count on my ROOT total and one that will. Guess which one I am reading most of the time? The book for the group read that came from the library.

I am also thankful for audio books. Half of my total ROOT reads this year is because I listened to the book instead of reading it.

#63 I'd also be able to finish way more book if I'd listen to them, but I find, that Iam somehow don't remember much of the content after listening to it at it's definitely another experience listening than reading. I guess I'm just oldfashioned in this way :-)

Listening to a book is definitely a different experience than is reading it. Some books just don't work well in the audio format. Others work better, or perhaps the reader brings it to life in such a way that it enhances the literary experience.

>74 karspeak:: I loved Song of Achilles when I read it Karen. If fact I gave it away & couldn't help but to buy it again. I know I will read it again one day.

I completed An Episode of Sparrows, (5*) last night and am beginning Cold Comfort Farm which will be my 8th ROOT for October and my 39th on the year. This puts me is good shape for making goal (48) this year. I may in fact need to bump that up.

Will update tickers at month's end.

I'm working hard on it, I'm halfway through my 19th ROOT, but I won't manage it in October. Would be nice to see how many others have crossed the line.

I read 10 more off my shelf during October, which brings me to 99 books for the year. I have one more book to read to reach my goal of 100. I am now switching to a pile of books from the library, but will definitely be finishing my ROOT Challenge in a week or so. I will continue to post my roots here in order to help the group ticker move along.

For some reason my clever Google Docs ticker isn't showing up any more, but in any case I've been too distracted by various lengthy non-ROOTS reads and have only managed one more ROOT in October, taking me to a disappointing 34/60. Good news is that it was the first part of a trilogy, so I should add at least two more in November.

Only 12 for me for the month of October. I realize that I made my goal too large, but I hope to have some free reading time during the holidays improve my progress.

My individual ticker has been updated to a grand total year to date of 117.
