To be plunged into again. Heard distantly of hardwick before but didn’t really know about her. The Kentucky grounding was a nice surprise. ( )

Slim yet dense. So much goes on yet nothing happens. There's a story somewhere yet there is no narrative. I'm just running out of conjunctions over here.

It's obvious why this book is considered a seminal text among many of the authors that I love. The structure of Jenny Offill's Dept. Of Speculation is reminiscent of the random paragraphs in Sleepless Nights; there are tons of loose and fragmented thoughts with no sense of cohesion to the statements written just before. Rachel Cusk's protagonist in Outline also feels like the direct descendant of this novel in the sense that readers only learn about the narrators via their experiences with others. I even get some Maggie Nelson energy, but maybe I'm just grasping at straws.

This didn't floor me like I hoped it would. If push came to shove I'd describe the plot as nonexistent and the writing as uneven, but I appreciate its wit, intelligence, and significance.

Incredibly beautiful words that flow and captivate imagination and interest. I truly enjoyed reading this series of delightful essays with an exquisite almost magical take on ordinary people and scenes. A joy for the senses of a reader! ( )

Slapeloze nachten. Door: Elizabeth Hardwick.

Ik las dit boek toen ik (wegens de hitte) zelf slapeloze nachten had, dat leek me wel gepast. En ergens was dat ook wel zo. Dit boek leest als een onderbroken nacht. Waarin dromen ontstaan, afbreken en een paar uur later gewoon weer verdergaan, personages komen op en gaan weer af, alles vloeit wat in en uit elkaar.

Hardwick heeft een nonchalante, doch trefzekere, beeldende, beschrijvende stijl. Ze fileert vakkundig mensen, veelal vrouwen. Het lijkt soms willekeurig wat ze vertelt, schrijft, maar alles bij elkaar is dit boek een liefdevolle verzameling van portretten. Door een vrouw die alles ziet en beschrijft maar zelf niet echt aanwezig lijkt, nooit het middelpunt vormt.

Naast oog voor detail heeft ze ook veel gevoel voor humor. Ze verblijft een tijdje in Nederland en schrijft daar: “… voormalige echtgenoten ontmoetten elkaar steeds weer met hun tweede mannen en tweede vrouwen op dezelfde dineetjes en verjaardagen.” (Droog maar ook droogkomisch, lees het vooral zelf.)

Slapeloze nachten is niet onder één etiket te vangen, Lauren Groff die de inleiding voor dit boek schreef vergelijkt het een beetje met Bluets van Maggie Nelson. Dat begrijp ik maar voor mij voelt het niet zo. Op Nelson (en haar boeken) werd ik instant verliefd, ik werd door haar woorden opgezogen. Hardwicks’ fragmenten slepen me minder mee, het is moeilijker om me aan haar woorden te hechten. Maar het blijft een boek dat je gelezen moet hebben. ( )
