From the Page to the Stage with Main Street Theater For Youth—Our fourth season will kick off with Lilly’s Purple Purse. Meet the actors, hear the story, and make a craft. For all ages. About the Book: Lilly loves all sorts of things. She loves school, she loves dressing up, she even grows to love her stinky baby brother, Julius. In fact, Lilly loves everything! At least, she loves everything most of the time. Even Lilly has some bad days. But when you have movie star sunglasses and a purple plastic purse, how bad can it be?! Children will love the madcap antics of these beloved characters taken from three of Henkes’ books, Chester’s Way, Julius, Baby of the World and Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse. Diesel, A Bookstore in Larkspur welcomes kids and parents to the store for our Reading Together Book Groups on Sunday, July 6th at 2pm and 4pm.

The first group, for kids aged 8-10, is reading The Year of Billy Miller by Kevin Henkes and will meet at 2pm. It might not be the best way to start the school year: with a lump on his head from an accident at the Jolly Green Giant Statue. But as seven-year-old Billy enters the second grade filled with worry, he soon discovers he has nothing to fear. This is his year, The Year of Billy Miller.

The second group, for kids aged 10-12, is reading One Came Home by Amy Timberlake and will meet at 4pm. In Wisconsin, 1871, young Georgie Burkhardt is known for two things: her uncanny aim with a rifle and her habit of speaking her mind. When her sister, who ran off with a group of “pigeoners” trailing the passenger pigeon migration, is believed dead, Georgie refuses to accept the facts and sets out to find her.

Reading Together is a special kind of book group designed to bring together kids and parents through, you guessed it, books! Once a month, we'll get together and discuss a book that you have each read.

Note to the kids: Your parents can read some boring stuff! Help them out with something good.

Note to the parents: This is a guilt-free way to read some fantastic, accessible, funny/action-packed/moving literature and share in your kids' reading adventures!

A Room of One's Own is delighted to participate in the Indies First campaign, proposed by Sherman Alexie to encourage authors to volunteer for a shift at their favorite local indie bookstores this holiday season. We will have several local authorsworking at various times throughout the day, including Kevin Henkes, Michelle Wildgen, E.M. Kokie, Susanna Daniel, and Dale Kushner, recommending great gifts to our customers (and signing a few of their own books, if you're so inclined!) on November 30th, so stop in to meet and greet with them and support us on Small Business Saturday!

Join our bookseller Christina for preschool storytime and craft activity in the Readings Gallery, in celebration of Children's Book Week. We'll be reading Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse and other Kevin Henkes titles. A craft activity will follow. Come dressed in purple, or wear some mouse ears, as we have a good time together!
