I wasn't into Tommy at all, but if this is the source of the story about Kipling that I vaguely remember, it might be worth it. ( ) This is the first graphic novel I've read in a while. The premise kind of grabbed me-- a guy whose father had used him as the protagonist in his Harry-Potter style series of children's books finds himself unsure whether his life is real or fictional. And I guess that's what it starts to be about. But actually there's much more there, including a lot of violence perpetrated by a semi-supernatural character whose mission seems to be to destroy Tom Taylor. Tom, meanwhile, has a kind of saviour following him around, who may or may not be a fictional character. I realize that the premise is purposefully tangled, with fantasy and reality blurring, but I found it hard to follow and, frankly, I just didn't care. The art seemed kind of conventional, the speech bubbles contained distracting and arbitrary emphasis points, and the violence was gratuitous and horrific. Maybe the story becomes more clear (though "clear" is relative in this series, I'm guessing) in subsequent volumes, but I'm not willing to find out. Sayonara, Tom Taylor. Mike Carey seems to enjoy tackling the "big issues" in his graphic nvels; he questioned the meaning of existence and creation in the Lucifer series, and now he's on to the meaning of words, language, and (of course) creation again. In this series our protagonist is human (or at least he thinks he is), and he must face down the identity that his father created for him, both in the real world and as the inspiration behind teen wizard Tommy Taylor. This series looks like it's going to be very interesting because it combines two of my favourite topics (magic and literature), so I can't wait to see where it goes!
Unwritten manages to tell a fast-paced supernatural horror story while musing philosophically on the role of narrative in our lives and nations. It makes for engrossing and exciting reading, and I'll certainly be on the lookout for the next collection. ContieneÈ ispirato aPremi e riconoscimentiElenchi di rilievo
"Tom Taylor's life was screwed from the word go. His father created the mega-popular Tommy Taylor boy-wizard fantasy novels. But dad modeled the fictional epic so closely to Tom that fans constantly compare him to his counterpart, turning him into a lame, Z-level celebrity. When a scandal hints that Tom might really be the boy-wizard made flesh, Tom comes into contact with a mysterious, deadly group that's secretly kept tabs on him all his life. Now, to protect his life and discover the truth behind his origins, Tom will travel the world, to all the places in world history where fictions have shaped reality" -- from publisher's web site.
