Maybe I should give it a reread. I wasn't into Tommy at all, but if this is the source of the story about Kipling that I vaguely remember, it might be worth it. ( )

I think I read the first ~3 volumes and then gave up in this. While it's mildly interesting and the idea seems intriguing, I found it not engaging enough to make me keep reading. ( )

This is the first graphic novel I've read in a while. The premise kind of grabbed me-- a guy whose father had used him as the protagonist in his Harry-Potter style series of children's books finds himself unsure whether his life is real or fictional. And I guess that's what it starts to be about. But actually there's much more there, including a lot of violence perpetrated by a semi-supernatural character whose mission seems to be to destroy Tom Taylor. Tom, meanwhile, has a kind of saviour following him around, who may or may not be a fictional character. I realize that the premise is purposefully tangled, with fantasy and reality blurring, but I found it hard to follow and, frankly, I just didn't care. The art seemed kind of conventional, the speech bubbles contained distracting and arbitrary emphasis points, and the violence was gratuitous and horrific. Maybe the story becomes more clear (though "clear" is relative in this series, I'm guessing) in subsequent volumes, but I'm not willing to find out. Sayonara, Tom Taylor. ( )
