This was a really good book. It's hard to make an assassin a really sympathetic character, but I liked Katsya, and I really liked Po. I like that their solution is tailored to them. I like the villain twist, and the well-crafted political ins and outs. The book did seem to end quite suddenly, but I believe there are more. Certainly the third book is about at least one of the characters. In all, quite an enjoyable read, and I look forward to more by this author. I like the first 2/3 of Graceling a lot. The main character is badass. There is a moment in the book where she feels betrayed about something and I really empathized with her. I like how Katsa and Poe interact with each other, and I think the world is interesting. However, the last third of the book is kind of strange. The relationship between Katsa and Poe takes a very unnatural turn, and the book gets kind of preachy and forced. A very refreshing young adult novel with an atypical female lead. Katsa is a Graceling, a person born with a special enhanced ability (not a super power persay, as they are more mundane abilities; referred to as a Grace), and evident by having eyes of two different colors. Katsa's Grace is for fighting and her uncle the King uses her as his enforcer. Katsa is a smart woman, can easily beat or kill anyone who comes against her and desires none of the trappings or roles for the women of her country. She can take care of herself, and frequently is the one doing the rescuing. This a good book for young girls, and a good alternative for a genre which can be filled with princesses needing rescuing or focused on marriage.
In a world of gossip girls, it is perhaps refreshing to have a teenage heroine who cuts off all her hair because it gets in her way; and Kristin Cashore’s eccentric and absorbing first novel, “Graceling,” has such a heroine. Katsa is tough, awkward, beautiful and consumed by pressing moral issues È contenuto inPremi e riconoscimentiMenzioniElenchi di rilievo
In a world where some people are born with extreme and often-feared skills called Graces, Katsa struggles for redemption from her own horrifying Grace, the Grace of killing, and teams up with another young fighter to save their land from a corrupt king. I think this was a fun read! Graceling is unique in that the main character is already powerful and already had a sense of purpose from the beginning of the novel. However, I think there was a lot of loss potential. The council could have played a larger role in the story, and it would have interesting to see a political play between them and the different kingdoms.
Also, it kind of bugged me how everyone seems to know about the council except King Randa (or whatever his name is) himself. That doesn’t make any sense. At some point it turned into a useful plot device to get Katsa out of trouble.
*Random thoughts*
Are we supposed to forget about the fact that Katsa was in love with her cousin at the beginning of the book? Was it really necessary?
Bitterblue’s dad was a monster, but her mom has got to answer for giving her that name.
