In a world where some people are born with extreme and often-feared skills called Graces, Katsa struggles for redemption from her own horrifying Grace, the Grace of killing, and teams up with another young fighter to save their land from a corrupt king.
  1. 333
Hunger games di Suzanne Collins (librarymeg, saltypepper)
saltypepper: The heroines' voices are very similar, maybe due to their similar response to the awful circumstances they find themselves in.
  2. 301
Fire di Kristin Cashore (SheReads, Utente anonimo)
SheReads: Prequel to Graceling about different characters.
Utente anonimo: because you get the same different world paranormal thing and you get the romance and the good conquers evil
  3. 220
The Hero and the Crown di Robin McKinley (Aerrin99, humouress)
Aerrin99: Aerin and Katsa are both gifted women who struggle to find the line between respect and fear. Also, they kick butt.
humouress: The way the heroines feel like outsiders because of their heritage is similar, as is the way the authors describe the way the heroines think.
  4. 211
Alanna: The First Adventure di Tamora Pierce (francescadefreitas, helgagrace, espertus)
espertus: Both Graceling and the Lioness quartet are stories of strong but vulnerable young women wanting to use their considerable powers for good and maintain their identity in the face of romance.
  5. 170
Poison Study di Maria V. Snyder (deadbookdarling)
deadbookdarling: Both are set in magical worlds, have strong female leads and a dash of romance.
  6. 170
The Blue Sword di Robin McKinley (foggidawn, Aerrin99, humouress)
Aerrin99: For stories that feature interesting and strong woman matched with equally interesting and strong men, with a dash of danger, adventure, and magic tossed in, try either of these books!
humouress: The way the heroines feel like outsiders because of their heritage is similar, as is the way the authors describe the way the heroines think.

    Terrier di Tamora Pierce (notemily)

The Thief di Megan Whalen Turner (notemily, C.Vick)

Graceling is a phenomenal book from what I remember and it holds really sentimental value for me with Courtney. ( )

Because Katsa has the ability to overpower any opponent, King Randa sends her to intimidate the citizens of Midluns. She despises her abilities and rebels by participating in a secret counsel to serve the community in a positive way. The counsel offers to assist Prince Po on his mission to find his grandfather. The journey through the seven kingdoms provides ample opportunity for Katsa and Po to explore their graces.

Graceling is a gripping read from beginning to end. The full cast audio with musical elements only ensures the reader will finish the book faster. Kristin developed intriguing characters with backstories. This book is also a great stand alone. ( )

Pretty meh. A Mary-Sue heroine and some shaky world-building did nothing for the story. This is one series I won’t be bothering with.

This competently written, YA fantasy has a simple enough premise: essentially, a medieval land with marvel style mutants, aka. the Graced. However, these super powered individuals look just like regular people except they have heterochromatic eyes. Katsa, our main character, has a martial grace which makes her an almost invincible fighter. As you might imagine, this means she is both feared by many and abused by those with power. The first third of the book is quite enjoyable as it establishes Katsa and the cast of characters that surround her. Unfortunately, once the story takes a major turn after the first thrid I found myself less and less interested. The middle third of the tale is a quest/travelogue that also deals with the story's romantic plot and while this is capably written, it is both predictable and clichéd. Sadly, the last third does little to raise things out of these doldrums and feels overly rushed. Cashore's style is quite serviceable and her character work incredibly solid, but for me there just wasn't enough meat on the bone as far as the story goes and I felt the whole affair lacked the degree of imagination I was looking for. This being her first novel, I am curious to see where she grows in later works and am interested enough in the setting's potential to possibly give the second tale in the series a shot. - 2023/01/18 ( )

There are so many things I want to say about this book. The first is that I was not expecting the characters in this book to be my age or older. I was surprised to find Katsa and Po as young adults instead of young teens. But their surprising age and the intensity of their characters only added to my initial intrigue and surprise. For the first half of this book, I was completely engrossed in the story and my surprise at how interesting a read it was only added to that feeling. I started to lose my interest a little when Po and Katsa split up at Leck City. I was searching for a big plot twist to hit me at some point, and I think that my non-focus on the story gave it a more boring feel. I think this book is more of a young-adult/middle-schooler-type read, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t good. I actually did enjoy the story overall, and I plan to read the next installment at some point in the future. ( )

In a world of gossip girls, it is perhaps refreshing to have a teenage heroine who cuts off all her hair because it gets in her way; and Kristin Cashore’s eccentric and absorbing first novel, “Graceling,” has such a heroine. Katsa is tough, awkward, beautiful and consumed by pressing moral issues
