Breve biografia

This book was enjoyable. It wasn't exactly a dual timeline, instead it was all told from the point of view of Harriet. She was remembering things about her mother and grandmother's lives. I really enjoyed the time period as it took place during the late 1800's and early 1900's. It talks a lot about the fight to bring in prohibition and the women's suffrage movement and I found that really interesting.
The one thing that brought the book down for me though was a woman being caught in a really depressing situation and not being able to get out of it. I feel like that's been a theme lately in the books I've been reading.
But overall I did enjoy the story and it was a clean read.

I haven’t figured out why, but sometimes, it’s a lot easier to buy books that you want to read rather than actually getting around to reading them. I’ve owned this book for around five years, but finally picked it up about a month ago—and as soon as I started the story, I wondered why I hadn’t taken the time for it sooner. This is a good book!

As a fan of Biblical fiction, I was impressed by this story. Not only is it well-written and engaging, but it also keeps to what we know of the Biblical characters and events with an accuracy I greatly appreciate. It bothers me when authors take liberties with Biblical events—there’s a reason why God had them put down as they are, and I don’t like it when things are changed for the convenience of the story. Lynn Austin doesn’t do that, and I respect her for it.

This book brings King Ahaz and the younger years of King Hezekiah to life. I appreciated that even though some of the major sins prevalent at that time were mentioned in the story (and several times, characters had to witness horrific things), those were never glorified or dwelt on in much detail.

If you’re looking for a well-written Biblical fiction series, I highly recommend this one. I’ve only read the first book in the series, but from what I’ve heard, they’re all good. I can’t wait to dive into book two!

First sentence: Adelaide Stanhope sat at her father's graveside, as still and upright as the surrounding tombstones.

All My Secrets is a generational historical romance (of sorts). The stories of a daughter, mother, and grandmother are interwoven. The story unfolds in a series of storytelling flashbacks--a revealing of past secrets. The three women are at a crossroads (of sorts). Difficult choices remain to be made. Will they fight to keep their mansion and their lifestyle even if it comes at great personal cost? Sylvia wants her daughter, Adelaide, to marry for money--and quickly--before the rumors start to spread of their change of fortune. Junietta wants her granddaughter, Adelaide, to choose a different path, a different life, to hold out on marrying until she falls head over heels in love. Junietta sees the dangers of wealth. It comes with great responsibility, but it corrupts and taints. Adelaide spends time listening to her mother AND listening to her grandmother. What will she decide? And how will she feel about the secrets of her mother and grandmother?

I don't always love stories told from multiple points of view. But I found all three narrators (and their stories) compelling--for the most part. The setting is New York in the nineteenth century. The "present" day is 1898/1899. The past occurs many decades before--also in New York.

Faith does play a role in the story but not in a stuffy way.

This book was so close to being a five star read for me. The only reason I knocked off one star was due to the timeline. This book is set over six years, but after the first year or two, the character growth became stagnant.

Tropes: Resistance in WWII, Coming back to God

Content: characters sent to concentration camp (conditions described in detail), death of family members, bombing, kissing
