"For fans of bestselling WWII fiction comes a powerful novel from Lynn Austin about three women whose lives are instantly changed when the Nazis invade the neutral Netherlands, forcing each into a complicated dance of choice and consequence. Lena is a wife and mother who farms alongside her husband in the tranquil countryside. Her faith has always been her compass, but can she remain steadfast when the questions grow increasingly complex and the answers could mean the difference between life and death? Lena's daughter Ans has recently moved to the bustling city of Leiden, filled with romantic notions of a new job and a young Dutch police officer. But when she is drawn into Resistance work, her idealism collides with the dangerous reality that comes with fighting the enemy. Miriam is a young Jewish violinist who immigrated for the safety she thought Holland would offer. She finds love in her new country, but as her family settles in Leiden, the events that follow will test them in ways she could never have imagined. The Nazi invasion propels these women onto paths that cross in unexpected, sometimes-heartbreaking ways. Yet the story that unfolds illuminates the surprising endurance of the human spirit and the power of faith and love to carry us through"--… (altro)

This book was so close to being a five star read for me. The only reason I knocked off one star was due to the timeline. This book is set over six years, but after the first year or two, the character growth became stagnant.

Tropes: Resistance in WWII, Coming back to God

Content: characters sent to concentration camp (conditions described in detail), death of family members, bombing, kissing ( )

This book leaves me speechless. It touched me on so many levels I don’t even know where to begin. I love ALL of Lynn Austin’s books and right now I believe this is her best.

This novel about the courageous people of The Netherlands and how they fought for the Jews and for their country’s freedom is inspiring. I cried, I felt joy, I felt anger, I found forgiveness. I saw how those people went through horrors yet still hung on to their faith and hope for freedom. This is a part of history that should never be forgotten. These people should never be forgotten.

Just two quotes from the book:
“How can God remain silent and do nothing in the face of all this evil?” she asked.
“He isn’t silent as long as we’re His voice and His hands.”

… “nothing any of us will ever face, now or in the future, is out of God’s control.” ( )

Lena is a wife and mother who wants nothing more than for life to go on as it always has and for her family to stay safe and be happy. But the events of WWII will change everything in the Netherlands, and Lena will have a lot of lessons to learn about accepting change and letting go. She has to start by letting go of her daughter, Ans, who is discontent with life in their village and wants to move to the city. There she will find work as a companion to a woman who is badly scarred by the events of the first World War. Meanwhile a young Jewish woman named Miriam is pondering whether or not to flee from Germany with her Papa. They have friends in The Netherlands who they think will be able to help them. Miriam's life soon comes to intersect with that of Ans, and Ans is forced to decide whether or not she will help those she sees being oppressed, or stand back and do nothing. Meanwhile Ans' mother Lena does not hesitate to use the resources of her farm to help those around her, but she fears for the lives of her husband, son, and father. This tale inspired by those who courageously stood up to evil inspiring and realistic. I would recommend it to those who enjoy WWII fiction and the inspirational genre. ( )

I haven't read any World War II fiction books that took place in the Netherlands before, although I did read the true life stories of Corrie ten Boom and Anne Frank. It was a compelling and heartfelt book and the characters touched your heart. One of the best books of this popular subgenre that I have read. ( )

How the invasion and occupation of The Netherlands in World War II affected the whole nation, and how the nation and individuals variously responded is a story well worth telling. On the one hand there was fierce resistance, and yet there was also compliance and collaboration with the occupiers. People were displaced, Jews were hunted down, many were hidden, some were revealed to the occupiers, family members disappeared, and hunger caused many people to perish.

To tell that all in one fictionalised account is difficult, and in this case the author has not completely pulled it off. However, it touches on many of the aspects of this extremely difficult situation, especially how a firm faith in God helped many of the key characters put everything into perspective. This book has multiple threads of the lives of three families that weave together. Difficult, even life threatening decisions have to be made. A few other characters are part of the story (a policeman, a few key resistance contacts, hosts of 'onderduikers') but for the most part they are bystanders to the main story.

I hesitate to criticise the author - there is so much to tell; perhaps I already know to much from listening to individuals who were there as witnesses and actively involved. However, if you are new to this period of Dutch history, please read this book. It's well worth it.
By the way, do read Lynn Austin's books on Old Testament times; absolutely at the top of must-reads in my opinion. ( )

BE A SUPERHERO IN THE KITCHEN by Donna Glass isn’t just a children’s book it is a unique cookbook with recipes that kids can make with their mom’s help. I’ve made several of recipes kind of likes these over the years but there are a lot of really neat and different recipes. I really like that the recipes and so very easy to make, with only a few ingredients. The directions are easy enough to understand that older children can understand them fine. I would suggest an adult help with making these. When my niece comes, I plan to make some of these with her. I love the oh so fun recipe names, like Boomtastic Butter Cookies, Magical Cereal Bars and Powerful Potato Cakes. And I love of layout of the book and how the recipe with the ingredients, directions and Super Hero Tips. Author Donna Glass does such a outstanding job putting this book together and writing this awesome story. This is a much needed book for teaching children how to cook, and teaching them how to get around in the kitchen.

And Alejandro Chamberlain does a fabulous job with the illustrations of the kitchen and children working to make the yummy recipes. The characters are so very adorable, and everything in the kitchen is so amazing. I love the colors, so fit for children to love looking at. I even love looking at the pages and reading the story. And as always I love when the illustrations and words on each page fit so perfectly well together, like they do on each page in this book. After listening to the story, little ones can look at the pictures and tell their own story. I highly recommend this amazing book for you and your children. You will have many fun times in the kitchen with your kids.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
