The stellar cast on display at the Vineyard Theatre fluently voices Schwartz's imaginative linguistics. Kauffman's stylish production is a perfect showcase for Schwartz's unique way of communicating how humor may inform and illuminate the messy, contradictory human condition."– Jennifer Farrar, Associated Press "A first-rate production. Kate Mulgrew and Kathleen Chalfant give bravura performances. It is impossible not to admire Schwartz's deft facility with wordplay, reminiscent of the great Edward Albee. Anyone willing to think — and feel — will be rewarded by experiencing Somewhere Fun." – Brian Scott Lipton, Theatremania

Jock Soto - Montclair Public Library with the Authors Discussion Series
Watchung Booksellers, Sabato, Giugno 22 alle 2pm
Saturday, June 22nd, 2PM Montclair Public Library Auditorium Jock Soto Every step you take: A Memoir Water Flowing Together An award-winning film by Gwendolen Cates WATER FLOWING TOGETHER offers an intimate portrait of a remarkable dancer, Jock Soto, who retired from the New York City Ballet at age 40, after a 24-year career. Soto's journey as an openly gay man of Navajo Indian and Puerto Rican descent provides a rare glimpse into the life of a dancer and the disparate worlds which have shaped this important artist. This award-winning film by Gwendolen Cates premiered nationally on PBS Independent Lens in 2008.

In June 2005 Jock Soto, at forty years old, gave his farewell performance as a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. The program, an event of unprecedented ambition, showcased pieces from five legendary choreographers, and it capped one of the most storied careers in ballet history—an ascent that began when Soto was just three years old. After retiring, Soto was determined to embrace a new future, but he found himself obsessed with questions about his past—where had he come from, and where had he been?

Every step you take weaves together the diverse strands of Soto’s life: being the half-breed offspring of a Puerto Rican–Navajo couple, the gay son of a fiercely macho man, a naive teenager from the desert running in the sophisticated art world of New York, and a driven artist by day and hard-core party animal by night. Soto recalls his professional relationships with such icons as George Balanchine, Christopher Wheeldon, Darci Kistler, Lourdes Lopez, and many others. He shares his love of food throughout the book with recipes to mark the pivotal moments in his story. And he describes the newest chapter in his life: teaching at the renowned School of American Ballet.

Karen Shepard & Anne Ishii
Greenlight Bookstore, Lunedì, Giugno 24 alle 7:30pm
Monday, June 24, 7:30 PM Blogger/Author Pairings: Karen Shepard, author of The Celestials In conversation with Anne Ishii, blogger at the Asian American Writers Workshop's blog The Margins Introduction by series curator Ron Hogan of Beatrice.com Our ongoing Blogger/Author Pairings series features conversations between authors and bloggers who share territories, passions, and preoccupations. Combining historical and fictional elements, Karen Shepard’s novel The Celestials beautifully reimagines the story of seventy-five Chinese laborers who arrived in North Adams, Massachusetts in June of 1870. Author Darin Strauss writes, “Karen Shepard’s The Celestials is historical fiction that transcends—that bounds over—the genre…. Shepard is one of our best writers and this will be the novel that definitively proves it.” Shepard talks about her book and the Chinese-American experience with Anne Ishii, who blogs for the Asian American Writers Workshop. The event is introduced by Blogger/Author Pairings curator Ron Hogan, creator of the seminal literary blog Beatrice.com.
