Acclaimed playwright Jenny Schwartz (Somewhere Fun, God's Ear) will discuss her work and sign copies of her plays, joined by actress Kathleen Chalfant who will read from Somewhere Fun.

Jenny Schwartz, acclaimed playwright of God's Ear and Somewhere Fun, will discuss her work and sign copies of her plays. Jenny will be joined actress Kathleen Chalfant from Somewhere Fun, currently running at Vineyard Theatre through 6/23, who will read from the play. Ms. Schwartz and Ms. Chalfant will participate in a discussion and Q&A moderated by Vineyard Theatre Co-Artistic Director Sarah Stern, and Jenny will sign books afterwards.

Jenny Schwartz (Playwright) plays include God's Ear, CAUSE FOR ALARM, and Somewhere Fun, currently running at Vineyard Theatre. God's Ear was produced in New York by New Georges and Vineyard Theatre, also directed by Anne Kauffman. God's Ear has been produced nationally and internationally from Lisbon, Portugal to Boise, Idaho to Sydney, Australia. Jenny is the 2012 recipient of the Frederick Loewe Award for Musical Theatre for the development of her musical IOWA, which she is writing with composer Todd Almond. Other awards and honors include the American Academy of Arts and Letters' Benjamin H. Danks Award in Drama, a Kesselring honor, two grants from Lincoln Center's Lecomte du Nuoy Foundation, and Soho Rep's Dorothy Strelsin Playwriting Fellowship. Additionally, both God's Ear and Somewhere Fun were finalists for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. Jenny received an MFA in Theatre Directing from Columbia University, is a graduate of Juilliard's playwriting program, and a member of New Dramatists. Jenny co-chairs the Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab with director Ken Rus Schmoll. Greenlight is proud to partner with the Fulton Area Business (FAB) Alliance to bring children’s books outdoors this summer with three special Story Times in neighborhood parks and plazas! As part of FAB FRIDAYS, Greenlight will host a children’s book author on one Friday afternoon in May, June and August. Each author will do a presentation of their picture books and art, and then lead kids in a Sidewalk Chalk art project! Events are free, and attendees will receive a coupon for 15% off the author’s books at Greenlight. Saturday, June 22nd, 2PM Montclair Public Library Auditorium Jock Soto Every step you take: A Memoir Water Flowing Together An award-winning film by Gwendolen Cates WATER FLOWING TOGETHER offers an intimate portrait of a remarkable dancer, Jock Soto, who retired from the New York City Ballet at age 40, after a 24-year career. Soto's journey as an openly gay man of Navajo Indian and Puerto Rican descent provides a rare glimpse into the life of a dancer and the disparate worlds which have shaped this important artist. This award-winning film by Gwendolen Cates premiered nationally on PBS Independent Lens in 2008.

In June 2005 Jock Soto, at forty years old, gave his farewell performance as a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. The program, an event of unprecedented ambition, showcased pieces from five legendary choreographers, and it capped one of the most storied careers in ballet history—an ascent that be­gan when Soto was just three years old. After retiring, Soto was determined to embrace a new future, but he found himself obsessed with questions about his past—where had he come from, and where had he been?

Every step you take weaves together the diverse strands of Soto’s life: being the half-breed offspring of a Puerto Rican–Navajo couple, the gay son of a fiercely macho man, a naive teenager from the desert running in the sophisticated art world of New York, and a driven artist by day and hard-core party animal by night. Soto recalls his professional relationships with such icons as George Balanchine, Christopher Wheeldon, Darci Kistler, Lourdes Lopez, and many others. He shares his love of food throughout the book with recipes to mark the pivotal moments in his story. And he describes the newest chapter in his life: teaching at the renowned School of American Ballet.

Combining historical and fictional elements, Karen Shepard’s novel The Celestials beautifully reimagines the story of seventy-five Chinese laborers who arrived in North Adams, Massachusetts in June of 1870. Author Darin Strauss writes, “Karen Shepard’s The Celestials is historical fiction that transcends—that bounds over—the genre…. Shepard is one of our best writers and this will be the novel that definitively proves it.” Shepard talks about her book and the Chinese-American experience with Anne Ishii, who blogs for the Asian American Writers Workshop.
