Cinderellis and the Glass Hill (Princess Tales) di Gail Carson Levine

This has its high points, especially in terms of funny moments. But somehow, I couldn't get into the story. It started out well but soon became repetitive. I wouldn't call this a faithful retelling because it has hardly any points of similarities with the original "Cinderella". Just the initial part has some points in common with the fairy tale. But still, worth a try for the humour.

The Lost Kingdom of Bamarre di Gail Carson Levine

I've been meaning to read this since it came out and I'm glad I've finally got to it! I finished it in two days and was surprised by some of the plot points so I think it's definitely worth the read even if it didn't match Ella Enchanted but really, what could?

I appreciated how the characters were multi-dimensional and not purely evil or good. The moments of Rapunzel were also an exciting touch. I wish there'd been more information on what happened to Willem when he fell from the tower. What I couldn't abide though was all the Barmarres with their constant "Beg your pardon"s. When Lord Tove was frustrated with it too he moved up in opinion of him! Just say what you have to say and stop begging pardons!!

Ella Enchanted di Gail Carson Levine

I liked this retelling of Cinderella so much more as I read it with my kids. The emphasis is on standing up for yourself and learning the meaning of sacrificial love and true friendship. I think it’s a great improvement from the original story that it doesn't rely on a quick fairy godmother fix to solve every problem. Ella is clever and funny and is willing to try and solve her own problems. I love how her best friend Char knows who she truly is & loves her.
