Hercule Poirot thought that retiring to a small village to do some gardening would bring his detective career to a halt. Un villaggio pieno di pettegolezzi e segreti, un delitto in una grande villa ed una rosa di sospettati tutti con qualcosa da nascondere: già con queste premesse doveva per forza venir fuori un buon romanzo, sono proprio gli elementi con cui l'autrice da il meglio di sé. Se aggiungiamo un Poirot in stato di grazia ed una soluzione del mistero assolutamente strabiliante, ecco servita la ricetta per un giallo praticamente perfetto.
Questo forse è il libro in cui il talento da prestigiatrice di Dame Agatha è più evidente: nulla è lasciato al caso, ogni parola è studiata attentamente per ingannare in piena vista. In fondo l'autrice è sempre onesta, i personaggi a cui da vita no e su questa duplicità si basa il segreto del suo successo.
Agatha Christie al suo meglio: imperdibile per qualunque amante del giallo. ( )
