This is the first book written by Margery Allingham that I've ever read. As other reviewers have noted the plot is slightly uneven, although its clearly a mystery/adventure novel. Albert Campion is the heart of this novel and he is an enigmatic and charismatic character and this helped to keep my attention, especially as I wonder if he's met his match in the charmingly resourceful Amanda Fitton, I do hope so. An enjoyable, if sometimes frustrating, read.
The Case of the Late Pig
An entertaining novella. Campion is the narrator of this story, which leads to some interesting slight of hand in order to keep the solution of the mystery surrounding the death of Rowland Peters, the Pig of the title, an old acquaintance from school. Campion attends Pig's funeral, but six months later is called into investigate the murder of Oswald Harris, who turns out to be Pig and Campion and Lugg are drawn into an intriguing investigation.
The Tiger in the Smoke
Meg Elgibrogge is a war widow, or so she thinks, as the recent announcement of her engagement has resulted in her receiving a series of blurry photographs that seem to show her husband alive and well in contemporary London. But how does this connect to the series of murders committed by the escaped psychopath Jack Havoc? Full of atmosphere and the London fog, this is an evocative thriller set in post-war London. I was so intrigued by the solution to the mystery, and the tension of some of the encounters between the characters and the chase scenes in the fog, that I read this book in one sitting. Superb. ( )
