Tor.com's science fiction and fantasy flash fiction collection originally published in 2017 inspired by the now-iconic statement, now available in e-book format. She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted. Three short lines, fired over social media in response to questions of why Senator Elizabeth Warren was silenced on the floor of the United States Senate, for daring to read aloud the words of Coretta Scott King. As this message was transmitted across the globe, it has become a galvanizing cry for people of all genders in recognition of the struggles that women have faced throughout history. Three short lines, which read as if they are the opening passage to an epic and ageless tale. We have assembled this flash fiction collection featuring several of the best writers in SF/F today, including Seanan McGuire, Charlie Jane Anders, Maria Dahvana Headley, Jo Walton, Amal El-Mohtar, Catherynne M. Valente, Brooke Bolander, Alyssa Wong, Kameron Hurley, Nisi Shawl and Carrie Vaughn. Together these authors share unique visions of women inventing, playing, loving, surviving, and - of course - dreaming of themselves beyond their circumstances. Winter 2021 (January);

I picked this up ages ago with Tor.com released it and then never got around to sitting down and reading it (except, of course, for [a:Catherynne Valente|16376981|Catherynne Valente|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png], which I had read instantly). I saw a friend had read it lately, and felt compelled to follow in her footsteps. I fell so hard and so deep into this book, and I loved so very many different of the types of stories of women persisting in these small 1-4 page stories. ( )

Review of eBook

Written by Charlie Jane Anders, Brooke Bolander, Amal El-Mohtar, Maria Dahvana Headley, Kameron Hurley, Seanan McGuire, Nisi Shawl, Catherynne M. Valente, Carrie Vaughn, Jo Walton, and Alyssa Wong, these eleven science fiction and fantasy flash fiction stories each build a short, complete story around this statement:

“She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.”

Each story features a strong, determined woman . . . Moira, determined to stop the monsters. Caroline, wanting to prove herself to a powerful god. A scientist, persisting in her experiments to create gold. Mary and her sister, giving blood. Margot, thinking about interfacing with a Hyperbrain. Miss Baker on a mission to defy gravity. Cora, with a hope, a dream, and a new prayer. Blue, the last of the Minotaur wives, seeking escape. She persisted as told in the jump rope rhyme. A mother on a mission. The ordinary woman who dreamt kindness.

Readers of science fiction, fantasy, and flash fiction will find much to appreciate here.

Highly recommended. ( )

Eleven SF stories inspired by the statement: She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.

The advantage of flash fiction is that it doesn’t seem like a big risk -- it doesn’t matter if I don’t like a story, because I haven’t invested much time or emotional energy in it. The disadvantage of flash fiction is that each story has so little time in which to make me care.

If these stories had been longer, they also could have expanded upon their theme with greater nuance and variety.

I thought Jo Walton’s poem “The Jump Rope Rhyme” worked successfully in this format. The only quote I bookmarked is from “Alchemy” by Carrie Vaughn:

The materials were often toxic, the procedures tedious, the outcomes uncertain but she found solace in the experiments. The formulae she used made sense. The laws of the universe were predictable, discoverable. Unlike so much of the rest of her life. ( )

I enjoyed every one of these (very) short stores. A couple of them even gave me that decidedly delicious frisson of twisty surprise. ( )
