Nadie se esperaba que Yasmine Khadra fuera un hombre, nadie se esperaba que tras este nombre femenino se escondia un militar argelino, el comandante Mohamed Moulesschoul, seudónimo que se había visto obligado a adoptar para poder denunciar en su novelas, sin sufrir represalias, tanto las corrupciones e injusticias del régimen argelino como las sangrientas locuras de los integristas islamicos.

Einer der wohl bekanntesten arabischen Schriftsteller
veröffentlichte als hoher algerischer Offizier unter
weiblichem Pseudonym seit Jahrzehnten spektakuläre Romane
(vgl. "Die Landkarte der Finsternis", ID-A 11/13). In
diesem autobiografischen Roman erzählt er von seiner
Kindheit und Jugend. Als kleiner Junge wird er auf Wunsch
des Vaters und ihm völlig unverständlich aus seiner Familie
gerissen und wächst in einer Kadettenschule auf. Neben
militärischem Drill und zahllosen sinnlosen Schikanen
entwickeln sich dort enge Freundschaften unter den Jungen,
die zu einer Ersatzfamilie werden. Dem Vater zuliebe, mit
dem ihn eine seltsame Hassliebe verbindet, tritt er danach
in die Militärakademie ein und wird Offizier. Schon in
früher Jugend entwickelte er eine große Leidenschaft für
das dichterische Schreiben, das unerwarteterweise in der
Kadettenanstalt geformt und gefördert wird. Ein fesselnder
Roman, der wie ein klassischer Entwicklungsroman erzählt
wird und daneben ein eindrucksvolles Bild der algerischen
Gesellschaft in den 1960er- und 70er-Jahren mit all ihren
Widersprüchen zeichnet. Breit empfohlen. ( )

Although I liked L'Ecrivain, I believe I might have appreciated it more had I first read one of Khadra's novels(Yasmina Kadra is the pen name of Algerian writer and ex Algerian army officer, Mohammed Moulessehoul.) I would call L'Ecrivain a classic kunstlerroman except that Khadra's is not a tale of the sensitive young artist struggling against the confines of bourgeois society. Instead, and quite startlingly, his is the account of a boy sent off to military school, and into exile, at age 9 by an army officer father, who soon after divorces the boy's mother, thus committing her and her children to another kind of exile, that of poverty. The boy Mohammed both fits in (he becomes a sports star and literary hero at the school)and radically does not fit into the military-academy world. I found especially fascinating his account of competitive reading among a group of cadets, Mohammed included (as seriously pursued as any I win-you lose sporting contest). Moulessehoul returns again and again to his "I've always known that I'm a writer" vocational passion. In doing so, he becomes somewhat tedious (or perhaps, I'm just disenchanted with coming-of-age stories in general)The book ends at the point where Mohammed must choose between leaving the military to pursue his dream or fulfilling the dream of his estranged parents that he "save" and honor the family by becoming an army officer. As we know from Khadra's biography, he manages to accomplish both, writing under a female pen name and not revealing his true identity until he leaves both the army and Algeria after a quarter of a century of having lived a double life.
