I found that the suggested peaceful spots were indeed very chill and worth seeking out. Good book. ( )Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing. This a very pleasant, but surprising guide to Los Angeles and its environs. It leads you to places where you can reflect, enjoy, experience, realize, not in an active, ecstatic, vibrant mode, but in a quiet way, that helps you forget how large the metropolitan area is that you are visiting. Besides Los Angles itself, you are taken from Malibu right across to the San Gabriel Valley, and from Long Beach up to the San Fernando Valley. 110 places are covered, and besides a nice description and perhaps an evocative photograph or two, there is a convenient listing of 'essential' information. A truly useful alternate guide! Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing. I checked for my favorite peaceful places and they're all there. I look forward to using this book to find others. Not a book to read straight through, but one to taste. Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing. In Peaceful Places, Los Angeles, Laura Randall explores “110 Tranquil Sites in the City of Angles and Neighboring Communities,” providing descriptions, photos, and useful information for those seeking serene respite in a megalopolis known for glitz and traffic. The sites are organized alphabetically, from Amir’s Garden in Griffith Park (Hollywood) to the Zona Rosa Caffe (Pasadena), and ranked with three stars (“heavenly anytime”), two stars (“almost always sublime”), or one star (peacefulness limited to certain designated times). Randall also offers two alternate “paths” for finding the sites – by category and by geographic area (sort of like a Zagat guide to tranquility). The sites fall into several categories: enchanting walks, historic sites, museums and galleries, parks and gardens, quiet tables, reading rooms, spiritual enclaves and others. Randall’ s descriptions are detailed and evocative. She has a breezy style that is like getting information from a well-informed friend. This book is a treasure for Los Angeles residents looking to explore the quieter corners of their city. It is also a must-read guide for visitors who want a break from the hectic bustle of the typical trip to southern California. Also posted on Rose City Reader. Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing. "Peaceful Places: Los Angeles" is a charming, unique look at an otherwise bustling city. Randall highlights a variety of sites including the expected museums, spas and beaches as well as a number of less likely spots to find a bit of quiet.Randall's writing is chatty and personal, so reading the entries is rather like having a friend whisper suggestions in your ear. The book includes many photos as well, though the splendor is often diminished because they're only in black and white. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

During her 1930s screenwriting days in Hollywood, wordsmith Dorothy Parker famously pegged Los Angeles as "72 suburbs in search of a city." Today even more communities radiate from the downtown core, creating a metropolitan universe of noise, speed, and congestion amid the glitter and bling. Los Angeles-based author Laura Randall knows just where to go for some urban stress relief. The second in a new guidebook series spotlighting calming sites in major U.S. cities,Peaceful Places: Los Angeles serves up a medley of soothing sanctuaries, panoramic vistas, fragrant gardens, restorative hideaways, and unexpected urban oases. Altogether, the entries present a feast for all five of the senses -- not to mention the sixth sense, that perception that "this place quiets my soul."
