hi, i read a book in middle school (about 6-8 years ago, 2014-2016ish) that i don't remember the title, author, or name of the protagonist of.
it was a fiction novel about a girl that lives in a perfectly "utopian" city, where on their 18th birthday (or somewhere thereabouts), the citizens are able to select everything about their appearance, from their hair color to teeth shape and color to their sex and gender. in return, the citizens lose their reproductive organs and therefore can't have children on their own, though they don't know this. the citizens are born in "pods" of about 5 or 6, i think, and all go to the "changing" facility together. when the protagonist is on her way to the facility, her transport crashes and everyone else in her pod dies except for her. she swims to shore outside the city and finds a family that is technically a "rebel" family since they live outside the city. the protagonist's LI lives with his mother and siblings, and his one sister is deaf. it's while she's here that she gets her period for the first time because she had been on hormone blockers her entire life so she wouldn't develop a female body. eventually, she decides she doesn't want to go back to the city and wants to stay with her LI and his family, but the LI's deaf sister is then kidnapped, forcing her to return. the book was set up in such a way that a sequel was implied to be coming.
i have no idea when this book was written, only that i read it when i was in middle school, around 2014-2016, and the intended audience is probably teenagers? i read the book in the eastern part US, though i doubt that will have any effect, because it seemed like a book that sold well and had multiple copies out there in the world. it was in english though, that's for sure.
other than that, i'm pretty sure the title was one word, and i'm pretty sure either the LI or the protagonist's name starts with the letter K. the LI might be named kai? i'm really not sure.
