Musicologist Richard Taruskin died July 1 at the age of 77. His books include Music in the Western World, Music from the Earliest notations, and The Oxford History of Western Music.

Journalist and crime novelist Susie Steiner died on 2 July aged c 51 (born 1971). She wrote 3 novels featuring Manon Bradshaw, including Missing, Presumed and a 4th book, but was diagnosed with a brain tumour over 3 years ago. Her death has been announced via her Twitter account.

Stage director Peter Brook died July 2 at the age of 97. His books include The Empty Space and The Shifting Point.

Soccer goal keeper Andy Goram died July 2 at the age of 58. He wrote The Goalie: My Story and Andy Goram: My Life.

The creator of Yu-Gi-Oh, Kazuki Takahashi died July 6 at the age of 60.

Hong Kong novelist Yi Kuang died July 1 at the age of 87. His books include Return of the Hermit.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated on July 8 while giving a speech. He was 67. His books include Towards a Beautiful Country: My Vision for Japan and Japan and ASEAN, Always in Tandem.

Novelist Susie Steiner died July 2 at the age of 51. Her books include Missing, Presumed and Persons Unknown.

British broadcaster Michael Barratt died July 10 at the age of 94. His books include Making the most of Media and Michael Barratt’s Complete Gardening Guide.

Should be Michael Barratt I think, though I suspect that this is more than one author, with both first and last names being quite common. Did the broadcaster work on gardening programmes and/or publish books on gardening? There are several guides to A level Business Studies here too.

Michael Barratt Brown appears to be the author of lots of old socialist pamphlets on economics, socialism and capitalism, etc.

Psychologist Ann Shulgin died July 9 at the age of 91. Her books co-authored with her husband include PIHKAL: A Chemical Love Story and TiHKAL: The Continuation.

First wife of former President Trump, Ivana Trump died July 14 at the age of 73. Her books include For Love Alone, Raising Trump, and Free to Love.

Antiquities expert Jerome M. Eisenberg died July 6 at the age of 92. His books include Art of the Ancient World, A Guide to Roman Imperial Coins, and One Thousand Years of Ancient Greek Vases.

Chemist and former member of the Chicago Seven John Froines died July 13 at the age of 83. He was a contributor to The Conspiracy.

Night club owner Mark Fleischman died July 13 at the age of 82. He wrote Inside Studio 54.

Joan Lingard died 12th July 2022. Oddly one of the books for which for which she is best known is titled The Twelfth Day of July. First of a quintet set in Belfast in the Troubles. She wrote many novels for children.

>19 PossMan: I loved the above mentioned series featuring Sadie and Kevin - they're children in book 1 but meet again later in their teens at the start of book 2, and not all the books are set in Belfast. I loved this series as a kid, and I also enjoyed her 4 book series featuring Maggie in Scotland (my memory is that she was Scottish but wrote books set in a variety of cities as well as other countries). Both these series were set at the time they were written, more or less. She also wrote historical fiction for kids/teens and fiction for adults.

Actor L. Q. Jones died July 9 at the age of 94. He wrote the novelization of The Brotherhood of Satan.

Rock ‘n’ Roll journalist David Dalton died July 11 at the age of 80. His books include James Dean: Mutant King and co-authored Meat Loaf’s To Hell and Back: An Autobiography.

Italian journalist Eugenio Scalfari died July 14 at the age of 98. His books include L’uomo Che non credeva in Dio and Per l’alto mare aperto

Climatologist Patrick J. Michaels died July 16 at the age of 72. His books include Climate of Extremes and Lukewarming.

Novelist Joan Lingard died July 12 at the age of 90. Her books include Across the Barricades and The Twelfth Day of July. * note the irony of the second title.

Founder of the Hollywood Black Film Festival Tanya Kersey died July 18 at the age of 61. She wrote Black State of the Arts.

German footballer Uwe Seeler died July 21 at the age of 85. He wrote Danke, Fußball! : Mein Leben.

Interior designer Carleton Varney died July 14 at the age of 85. His books include In the Pink: Dorothy Draper and The Draper Touch.

Military historian Correlli Barnett died July 10 at the age of 85. His books include Hitler’s Generals, The Desert Generals, and The Swordbearers.

Musicologist and psychoanalyst Michel Schneider died July 21 at the age of 78. His books include Marilyn’s Last Sessions and Morts Imaginaires.

Chef Diana Kennedy died July 24 at the age of 99. Her books include The Cuisines of Mexico, The Art of Mexican Cooking, and From My Mexican Kitchen.

Race car driver Paddy Hopkirk died July 21 at the age of 89. He wrote The Longest Drive of All.

Actor Paul Sorvino died July 25 at the age of 83. He wrote How to Become a Former Asthmatic.

Politician David Trimble died July 25 at the age of 77. His books include To Raise up a New Northern Ireland and The Foundation of Northern Ireland.

>31 varielle: I would describe David Trimble as a politician and leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, because he was far better known here for that. It's quite common for barristers (who have a separate role in the legal system here from solicitors) to embark on a political career here. This was actually the main party representing loyalists who wanted to preserve the union between Northern Ireland and mainland Britain for a long time MP, but over the years they have lost votes, MPs and seats at Stormont and the DUP (Democratic Unionist Party) has become the dominant Unionist political party

James Lovelock who was responsible for the Gaia hypothesis died 26th July 2022 on his 103rd birthday.

>34 varielle: Sorry to be pedantic. It's not that it's wrong to say he was a barrister, and I'm no fan - I was born in England but my family is Irish with very strong Republican sympathies - but how odd for a newspaper obituary to refer to him as a barrister rather than as a politician.

Native American publisher Tim Giago died July 24 at the age of 88. His books include Notes from Indian Country, Children Left Behind, and The American Indian and the Media.

Bernard Cribbins died on 28 July 2022 aged 93. He was an actor but his work included acting in films and TV series made from books (including the 1970s film of The Railway Children in which he played Albert Perks, narrating audio books, voices for animated TV programmes for children (see The Wombles, and Jackanory, a children's storytime TV pragramme.

Screenwriter Aaron Latham died July 23 at the age of 78. His works include Urban Cowboy and Crazy Sundays.

Children’s author Charlotte Pomerantz died July 24 at the age of 92. Her books include The Outside Dog, The piggy in the Puddle, and How Many Trucks can a Tow Truck Tow.

Biographer and memoirist Eli N. Evans died July at the age of 85. His books include The Provincials: A Personal History of Jews in the South and Judah P. Benjamin: The Jewish Confederate.

Former British ambassador to the US Sir Christopher Meyer died July 27 at the age of 78. He wrote DC Confidential and Getting our Way: 500 Years of Adventure and Intrigue.

Thriller author Stuart Woods died July 22 at the age of 84. His many books include New York Dead and Dark Harbor.

Irish musician Mick Moloney died July 27 at the age of 77. His books include Far from the Shamrock Shore, Close to the Floor, and Across the Western Ocean.

Geneticist Leon E. Rosenberg Died July 22 at the age of 89. He wrote Human Genes and Genomes.

Singer-songwriter Archie Roach died July 30 at the age of 66. His memoir was called Tell Me Why: The Story of My Life and My Music.

>40 varielle: I wondered who Archie Roach was as I knew nothing about him, and from the information available online, as well as being a singer songwriter he was active in a number of media and was a campaigner for the rights of his people. He was an Australian Aborigine who was one of a Stolen Generation subjected to a racist government policy of taking Aborigine children from their families and putting them into care. After being badly treated by two foster families he was taken in by a more affectionate foster/adoptive family whose own record collection was a musical influence. Later he found some of his family. His wife Ruby Hunter (1955-2010) was also affected by the same issues. Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter met when they were both homeless teenagers. They also made musical productions and film telling their story.

He is on my list of musical stuff to follow up now, and see what I can find online, but I'm sorry I didn't hear of him during his life.

Comic book writer Alan Grant died July 20 at the age of 73. He was the author behind many Judge Dredd stories and many Batman storylines.

Football player and manager Terry Neill died July 28 at the age of 80. He wrote Revelations of a Football Manager.

Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols died July 30 at the age of 89. Her books include Beyond Uhura and Saturn’s Child. 😢RIP Lieutenant.

Basketball great Bill Russell died July 31 at the age of 88. His books include Red and Me and Russell Rules.

Legal scholar Vicky Conway died July 22 at the age of 42. She wrote Policing twentieth century Ireland and The Blue Wall of Silence.

Newspaper editor Jerry Ceppos died July 29 at the age of 75. He wrote Covering Politics in the Age of Trump.

Journalist who covered space exploration George Alexander died July 24 at the age of 88. He wrote Moonport USA and Space Shuttle.

Robin Dalton died July 8th 2022 aged 101. She seems to have had a very interesting social life and in later life wrote a memoir One Leg Over. According to the Times obit the title referred to the difficulty of getting out of the bath in old age but I'm not so sure.

Co-founder of the Green Party in the US John Rensenbrink died July 30 at the age of 93. His books include Against all Odds: The Green Transformation and The Greens and the Politics of Transformation.

Irish Artist and illustrator Pauline Bewick died July 28 at the age of 86. Her work can be seen in Pauline Bewick: Seven Ages and The South Seas & A Box of Paints.

Comics and graphic artist and songwriter Sid Jacobson died July 24 at the age of 92. His work includes Anne Frank : the Anne Frank House Graphic Biography, The 9/11 Report: Graphic Adaptation and Che: A Graphic Biography.

Political scientist David Beetham died July 5 at the age of 83. His books include Democracy: A Beginner’s Guide and Bureaucracy.

Raymond Briggs died 9th August 2022 aged 88. An illustrator and writer of children's books including The Snowman. A Christmas present for one of my children many many years ago was Fungus the Bogeyman which condemned me to hours of bedtime reading.

I cringed a little but looked at it and did read it properly a few months later. As an 80s teenager worrying about nuclear weapons, I also remember how sad When the Wind Blows made me....

Professor of biblical languages Sister Carmel McCarthy died July 10 at the age of 78. Her works and translations include Ireland and the Reception of the Bible, The Syriac Peshiṭta Bible with English Translation: Deuteronomy, and Old Testament Short Story.

Architect Diane Haigh died July 31 at the age of 73. She wrote Baillie Scott: The Artistic House.
