Hi - I’m looking for a hard cover book I read in the late 1990’s (between 1997-1999). I randomly picked the book from my high school library. The story is historical fiction set in the Victorian era when women had to wait till a certain age before they could “come out” (present themselves to society). The protagonist is a woman who comes out but makes her debut in somewhat plain clothes and it’s clear she has no sense of fashion or class. I think she has an arranged marriage of some sort or a marriage of convenience, but her husband doesn’t really find her attractive or appealing and pays her no attention (he didn’t really want to marry her). However, as time goes on, she becomes fashionable, classy, and completely transforms into an attractive socialite. Another man begins to notice her and takes interest. I think he’s able to get her away to a private corner outside of a dinner or an event and makes physical advances towards her (she was a bit naive in going with him and didn’t think anything sinister was amiss). But her husband caught wind of the situation and was immediately struck by jealousy. He follows her and rescues her from the situation, falls in love with her and they live happily ever after. The book cover may have had a picture of a Victorian looking woman on the front (possibly with a pink or light colored dress of some sort) with a dark grey or black background color.

UPDATE: I may have found it (after literally hours of online research) but I could be wrong. I found a title called “The Convenient Marriage” by Georgette Heyer. The plot closely resembles my description above and even the book cover is somewhat similar. It’s been more than 20 years so I plan to read the book and find out. I’ll update to “Found” if I’m right.
