British science fiction author Ian Watson was born in 1943. He received a first class Honors degree in English Literature in 1963 and a research degree in English and French 19th Century literature in 1965 from Balliol College, Oxford. After lecturing in literature and Futures Studies, he became a mostra altro full-time author in 1976. His first novel, The Embedding, won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award and the French Prix Apollo. His novel The Jonah Kit won the British Science Fiction Association Award and the Orbit Award. He worked with Stanley Kubrick on story development for the movie A.I. Artificial Intelligence from 1990 to 1991. His poem True Love won the 2002 Rhysling Award from the Science Fiction Poetry Association. (Bowker Author Biography) mostra meno

Il Libro delle Creature (the book of being, 1985) di Ian Watson

Ultimo capitolo della saga, dopo le più strane vicende si tirano le fila dello scontro fra le Entità soprannaturali che sono dietro ai misteri del Fiume, del Verme e della Mente-Dio.
La deriva misticheggiante e visionaria cominciata col precedente romanzo diventa purtroppo eccessiva, appesantendo la lettura e suscitando non poche perplessità.
Cmq il libro resta ben leggibile, sostenuto sopratutto dalla curiosità del lettore per la risoluzione di tutta la vicenda.

Il Libro delle Stelle (the book of the stars, 1984) di Ian Watson

Seguito del Il libro del Fiume, continuano le vicende di Yaleen, la protagonista di questa piccola saga.
Libro carino, sebbene inferiore al primo, un po' più visionario e confuso ma godibile.

Il Libro del Fiume (the book of the river, 1983) di Ian Watson

Carino, storia fantasy più che sf, originale, avvincente e ben sviluppata: non solo una protagonista interessante e ben caratterizzata e che andrà in conto a molte avventure ma anche un gran lavoro di "creazione culturale", ovvero Watson si inventa una complessa (e credibile) rappresentazione di un intera cultura, un intero popolo che vive sulle rive di questo grande fiume.

Il grande anello di Ian Watson

Questo romanzo parla di un'indagine scientifica sulla natura del linguaggio vista dagli esseri umani e da alieni in visita sulla terra. Il libro di Ian Watson, autore noto anche per la sceneggiatura del film “AI , intelligenza artificiale” con Kubrick poi realizzato da Spielberg , è ispirato anche dall'opera del surrealista francese Raymond Roussel, che pubblico' nel 1932 una lunga poesia "embedded", "Nuove impressioni sull'Africa". Le frasi erano innestate una dentro l'altra come una matrioska, in un modo che i linguisti chiamano "embedding"(in inglese significa connessione , relazione, concatenazione) .Da qui lo spunto per Watson per trovare una struttura fantascientifica per affrontare le teorie linguistiche di Chomsky e la domanda su fino a che punto il linguaggio rappresenti la realtà.. Ma non è un romanzo intelletuale, è una storia appassionante di “Primo Contatto” con degli alieni antropomorfi ed enigmatici.… (altro)
