- In memoriam dat Vromans zelf ruim voor zijn dood in het tijdschrift Tirade (438, mei 2011) op zijn zo geëigende wijze schreef:
LEO VROMAN is uitsluitend op 10 april 1915 geboren en stierf heelhuids op een nader te bepalen ogenblik. Hij wordt door een vrouw en twee dochters nagezeten. Door een klein aantal lezers was hij beschouwd als een groot dichter en door een groot aantal mensen als een kleine of zelfs afwezige. Hij heeft geloof ik eens uitgerekend dat hij ongeveer 30 kilometer heeft geschreven, maar veel verder als je alle lussen van de letters recht trekt, hoewel zijn werk dan te rechtlijnig zou zijn om te genieten. Met zijn wetenschap, waar hij van leefde in alle opzichten, heeft hij, alweer volgens zijn berekeningen, ongeveer anderhalf miljoen dollar verdiend maar heeft daar een halve eeuw over gedaan. Zijn enige ontdekking, het z.g. Vroman Effect, wordt meestal verkeerd hoewel vaag omschreven als iets met bloedstolling. Het is in tegendeel iets dat daaraan voorafgaat en te snel is om hier te beschrijven. Dan zijn er ook nog zijn tekeningen, waarvan een grote stapel door een paar mensen, en een heel kleine stapel door velen is bewaard. Verder is hij bekend door iets wat hij niet heeft gedaan, nl. vechten aan de Grebbe-linie, en dan nog wel als wielrijder. Op jongere leeftijd was de fiets inderdaad een van zijn wapens, dat hij vaak per ongeluk op onschuldige lantarenpalen richtte en ook op latere leeftijd kon hij niet fietsen maar te voet wel goed verdwalen. Zullen we hem missen? Niet makkelijk: zijn boeken loeren nog overal, en zijn Effect is blijvend.

As a genre, the essay leaves room for a great deal of variation. Snippers by the Dutch author Leo Vroman can best be described as a collection of essays. However, these essays are of a very personal nature, coming close to memoirs or autobiographical writing. Besides, Vroman ponders on various everyday things and his early years in the United States in this volume.

Leo Vroman was a Dutch-American author and a hematologist. Born in the Netherlands he went to the United States where he was naturalized and obtained American citizenship in 1951. His main career in the United States was as a hematologist. He worked at various research institutes and published more than 70 articles and books in that field. In the Netherlands he was one of the most well-known and appreciated poets, publishing more than 40 books. His creative output was mostly written in Dutch, most of it poetry, and less prose. "Proza" contains his early works, a prose poem, a collection of short stories and essays.

This fictionalization is very thin, as Vroman and his wife appear in the stories under their own names, and other characters, such as Jan Greshoff are also described true to life and with their own names. One of the stories is written (and printed) in English.
Leo Vroman's escape from the Nazi-occupied Netherlands is quite spectacular and adventurous. At first glance, the title story "De adem van Mars" seems funny, or perhaps jocular, but apparently biographical details are accurate. From London, Vroman travelled to the Dutch Indies, where, in Batavia, he finished his studies. However, he was locked up in various Japanese concentration camps in the Dutch Indies (now Indonesia), before being transported to Japan via Singapore. The stories set in America describe life in the United States in the late 40s and early 50s.

Leo Vroman (1915 - 2014) was Dutch-American writer. He escaped from the Netherlands in 1940 and spent most of the war years in Japanese prison camps in the Far East. He moved to the United States in 1947, but continued publishing poetry in Dutch, becoming one of the most important Dutch poets of the 50s. He became a naturalized citizen of the US in 1951.
It isn't clear whether Brieven uit Brooklyn is a selection of a collection of letters by Vroman. Many of the letters in this book have been published in newspapers and magazines before, often around the time they were written. Most letters are reprinted without a salutation, and no name of an addresee although in some cases intended recipients are adressed directly in the first sentences. Therefore it isn't always clear whether they were personal letters or letters intended for publication.
Neither any particular letter, nor as a collection, are they of any real interest to the reader. Letters were written between 1948 and 1974. For many years there is just one letter, or no letters at all. For other years there are 4 or 5 letters. The quality and style of the letters seems to improve over time, but I cannot see of what interest any of these letters would be to any reader.
