Gillian Lynne was born Gillian Barbara Pyrke in Bromley, Kent, United Kingdom on February 20, 1926. Before becoming a soloist with the Sadler's Wells Ballet, she danced with the Ballet Guild. During her time with the Sadler's Wells Ballet, she danced the roles of the Black Queen in Checkmate, the mostra altro Lilac Fairy in Sleeping Beauty, and the Queen of the Wilis in Giselle. She left in 1951 to join the London Palladium as a star dancer, performing ballets created for her. In 1953, she appeared in the movie The Master of Ballantrae starring Errol Flynn. Her career as a choreographer started when she replaced the choreographer of a revue called England Our England. In 1965, she choreographed The Roar of the Greasepaint - the Smell of the Crowd, a musical that ran on Broadway for 231 performances. She choreographed three musicals by Andrew Lloyd Webber's entitled Cats, Aspects of Love, and The Phantom of the Opera. She received an Olivier Award for her choreography in Cats. She worked almost continuously until a few years ago. Her autobiography, A Dancer in Wartime, was published in 2012. She died from pneumonia on July 1, 2018 at the age of 92. - Gillian Lynne, née Pyrke, was born in Bromley, Kent, England. She began her career at age 18 in 1944 dancing with the Sadler's Wells Ballet (later known as the Royal Ballet). She later became a freelance dancer and film actress before moving into stage directing and choreography. She worked for decades helming productions in London's West End and on Broadway in New York.
She worked on television specials for performers from a variety of musical genres, including Ray Charles, Perry Como, and Petula Clark.
She also worked closely for many years with Andrew Lloyd Webber on some of his most famous works,
including the long-running "Cats" and "Phantom of the Opera."
After her death, Lloyd Webber renamed his New London Theatre as The Gillian Lynne Theatre, making it the first in London's theater district named after a woman.
Lynne received many honors for her years of theatrical work and was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2014. She was married to actor Peter Land for 40 years.
