Gripping, but too realistic and horrifying for kids. If I were the author, I would have turned this into a novel for adults. I won't keep this one.

Each poem in this book is a lullaby that an animal mother sings to her baby. They are free verse poems and do not have a rhyme. I think they are very sweet and can be read to children at bedtime.

Not as good as the original, but certainly entertaining to discover a sequel to one of my childhood favorites!½

This book is very Willa Cather in its portrayal of the harshness of prairie life, painting death and despair in vivid strokes. I'm sure if I read it today, I would better understand the author's intent than I did when I was nine or ten years old and picked this up from the library because it looked like a companion to Little House on the Prairie. What I remember of this book is that the images of death disturbed and stuck with me (verbatim) for years. The writing and topics dealt with here do not seem appropriate for early elementary; yet the cover and page length make it doubtful a middle-schooler would go anywhere near this. I'm not sure who the book can be recommended to.

Another great set of poems that I think students will really enjoyed. Many students can connect to animals and enjoy reading about them. Though poetry can be hard for them, this book will help them to understand and be entertained more. The different poems describe the different characteristics of each animal so students will be able to gain knowledge as well which is extremely important.

I wish I had this book when my children were babies. I would have read all these lullabies to them every night. I loved the Giraffe, Alligator, Oyster, & Seahorse lullabies. They were so adorable and I wish I had a little baby to read these to. My kids are into Captain Underpants and Harry Potter - the struggle is real in our house with books. I think my oldest boy would enjoy these lullabies cause he is a softhearted kid. This is inspiring and soothing to read too. I would hate to have students falling asleep in my class, but it is a great book to keep in my classroom library.

I enjoyed reading this book, it would be a great read for elementary students. The Lost Sailor turned out to be a better book than what I thought for the historical theme. The author used many words that sailors used during this time(1800's). A few of the words I actually did not know. When the captain was stranded on the island, he did not have items that we have today to use for survival. As a teacher, I can look up the older words with my students and learn about them and compare them to whatever device we have today in place of it. Another thing, is the illustration, observing this book it is obvious that it is set in a much earlier time frame. Overall, it is a great read and it teaches children to stick to whatever his/her dream is.

Read in?áThe 20th Children's Book Treasury.?á A neat message about empathy as the child (we're encouraged to deduce) has been scolded for not taking better care of his toys, so we readers can figure out the parents' anger, the child's shame, and the dolls' trauma. ?áBut because the humans are never shown, the emotional power of the book is muted, and so not too intense for a sensitive reader.

This book is about children, Lester and Louisa, who live on a Nebraska prairie. The book talk about the region there such as the miles of flat grasslands and the open sky. This would be good to tie into a unit on climate and terrain in certain areas because it talks about the prairie. It would be good to use with older grade levels because it is a chapter book. It can also be one that everyone has a copy to follow along with and the teacher reads while the students listen. This can be used for a project making the landscape of a certain place and presenting facts on what its like there. This can be done with model clay, on a poster board, a powerpoint or any other number of ways!

There once was a sailor who was known all over the world for his skills on the sea and unbelievable luck. One day, there is a huge storm and the ship is destroyed. The sailor finds an island and, after searching, is able to build himself a house. He lives on the island for years, waiting to be rescued and one day a fire destroys everything the sailor has left. When he wakes up the next morning, the sailor sees a man rowing a wooden dinghy. The sailor is rescued and the man says it is a good thing the man lit the fire or he would have never seen the island. The lesson that can be learned from this story is that sometimes a bad thing can actually turn out to be a good thing.

While not quite as delightful as Everywhere The Cow Says Moo, this concept book about animals noises in many languages makes up for in sophistication what it lacks in delightful structure. Each animal noise is given a specific poetically described place within its home country ("In Ireland, in County Longford on the road to Drumlish"), and each page includes a new language, teaching the adults along with the children that turkeys in Israel says "Holderolderol," ravens in the Yukon says "Klawk!" and wildebeests in Tanzania say "Blart!" Some of the artwork, done in oil, can be a little dark and complex, but the chance to repeat phrases will keep the listeners engaged.

This is written for children, so the writing is rather elementary, but it is still a great collection of stories for anyone of life on the prairie (Nebraskan, specifically) around the turn of the century. I love looking at this collection of old photos, and it makes me want to see Solomon Butcher's Pioneer History of Custer Country, Nebraska.
