The good things about the first book are still in operation. This is a fast-paced and enjoyable read. We learn much more about the nature of the threat that hangs over humanity (and several other alien species). There is also an increasingly more important romantic element. You have to understand that, since this is an adventure story, the author can't devote so much space to developing the romance, so it may feel a bit like insta-love.

Still enjoyable, but by now the story starts to seem a bit long. The "mystical" plasmex stuff does not really play to Devi's strengths, more physical in nature, and the story goes on and on about that, and about Devi's and Rupert's romance. All in all, I was glad when we got to the conclusion.

I liked the main character, a totally bad-ass female mercenary obsessed with personal combat armors. She's not always the brightest bulb in the box, but she's really good at what she does. Since the story is told in first-person, we see everything from her point of view, and her voice is sarcastic and entertaining. The tone of the setting reminded me of Star Wars, in the sense that the emphasis is on the adventure and alien species, and not on the practical difficulties of space travel. There's even some sort of mystical power/energy. The result is a fast paced and fun to read military SF novel, although rather than big space navies we get to see an individual mercenary in action, working as bodyguard to a peculiar space trader.

Light and enjoyable read.
