This is not the first annotation of the author’s favorite novel, but it surely is the most lush. In addition to ample margin notes, editor Patricia Meyer Spacks has peppered the pages with a bevy of era-appropriate illustrations, many in color. These not only provide the reader with a visual appreciation for the fashions, furniture and interior ambiance familiar to a gentleman’s family (chairs, fire screens, paintings of drawing-room interiors, etc.), but enriches one’s understanding of the lifestyle of Austen and the characters who people her novels. More intimate illustrations include a letter in her hand, a photo of her writing desk and a charcoal drawing of Harris Bigg-Wither, whose offer of marriage Jane accepted, then later declined.
