This cookbook couldn't bend to the fast pace of our e-mail driven world. Like a slow Sunday pot roast, it had to simmer . . . culminating many months of conversation, writing, and Amish wisdom." --Kevin Williams Part almanac, part cultural overview, part culinary calendar, The Amish Cook at Home is the harbinger of a new era in home cooking. As the follow-up to Elizabeth Coblentz's The Amish Cook, The Amish Cook at Home by her daughter, Lovina Eicher and her editor and friend Kevin Williams introduces a new generation to Amish cooking and culture. Structured around the four seasons, which heavily influence Amish life and cooking, The Amish Cook at Home offers recipes teaming with seasonal vegetables, fruits, and meat. Culinary traditions like Dandelion Jelly, Asparagus-Potato Soup, Chicken and Dumplings, and Concord Grape Streusel Pie are featured alongside Amish history, culture, and lore. Stories of Old Order days and glimpses into events like weddings, funerals, tax time, and the holidays are included, as well as anecdotes from Lovina's own family life shared with her husband Joe and their eight children. The Amish Cook at Home offers a welcome return to nature and community that is centered on the family table.… (altro)

This book is more than a collection of recipes. Lovina Eicher shares some of her family recipes along with showing us the Amish way of life. It's a beautiful book with lovely photographs. I haven't tried any of the recipes yet but intend to. ( )

While I did win a copy of this book though the Early Reviewers give-away. it was never recieved. However, I did subsequently purchase a copy of it through Doubleday's "The Good Cook" book club.
This book offers a good selection of recipes, as well as commentary on Amish life, customs, religion, and their outlook on what food is. The book has a great number of quality pictures to illustrate Amish practices and life.

While the depth of the recipes is not great, this is a good introduction of Amish cooking. ( )

I received an advance copy of this book. At first I was excited, as the title implies lots of recipes for delicious pies and stews made from fresh ingredients. What it actually is is a collection of nasty recipes loaded with canned and processed ingredients that I would never make for my family, let alone allow them to eat (Velveeta, Miracle Whip and salty canned soup, anyone? Disgusting!) accompanied by preachy, holier-than-thou stories about the author's Amish faith and lifestyle. None of it is appealing. I had no idea the Amish are so fond of processed foods - the recipes are really incongruous with the idea of wholesome, fresh cooking. This one won't be staying on my shelves. ( )

This book is decent for a cook-book, but there is a reliance on canned soups, vegetables, and other processed foods that take it from "simple pleasure" for me. I'm not sure I would use the recipes as they are, but some of them look good enough if altered a bit! ( )

This is a lovely book, one which should be left out on a coffee table for people to look at the stunning pictures. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to read it cover to cover, but did try one of the recipes, the Chicken Casserole. Both my husband and I found it bland, with additional seasonings necessary. I'm looking forward to trying more recipes and reading this book in the future. ( )
