The book mainly focuses on a little girl named Chi-Hoon. Read about her beautiful city rich in history and what a full week consists of if you lived in South Korea. ( ) The story of Chi-hoon follows a week in the life of an eight-year-old Korean girl living in the city of Seoul. The book chapters are separated by day and demonstrate the typical schedule and family events that happen in Chi-hoon's life. Chi-hoon's life is sometimes very similar to American Children's and yet at other times is completely different. She's held to the standard that if you aren't the best then you're pretty much nothing. Every week she strives to receive an award for her efforts and it seems like every week she falls short for one reason or another. So she attempts to model her life after a heroine from Korean folklore who sacrifices herself for her people and returns as a beloved and noble princess--quite a feat for an eight year old girl. It proves quite difficult for her to be as unselfish and understanding as her role model; often wanting her sister to play with her instead of studying or bothering her mom while she is trying to work. She also grows up in a society that still values boys over girls and has to endure her grandparents bugging her mother about bearing sons--which causes her inner conflict because she disagrees with her grandparents but still loves and respects them. It is sad to me that an advanced society like Korea can still hold onto outdated values and opinions about women's place in the world. We often think that all modern cultures treat their people with the same equality that American's do but it is often untrue. Still, this book is more about an eight year old's daily life than any kind of commentary on Korean society. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
