This is possibly a textbook for middle school children, but it isn't dumbed down, it is simplified. The authors are not caught up on themselves and their excellent understanding of art. They address the progress of art through the ages using specific examples which the reader can see due to the reproductions throughout.

I found this a nice read. Being a person who has never studied Art, or painting as such; this helped me to have a deeper understanding of not only the mechanics of making a painting, but also of "seeing" a painting. There isn't a whole lot of interpretation for the reader, rather the authors let you know what to look for in a good work, and then interpret on your own. Sculpture and other media is only briefly addressed; the focus is on painting. This was published in 1966.

It was a terrific volume to read before visiting the Legion of Honor in San Francisco where so many works of art from throughout history are on display. ( )
