Sniffing and Smelling is a wonderful book that teaches kids what their senses are, how to use them, what you use them for, and why you have them. This book helps to explain why these senses are important and how how they help us in everyday life. This is a wonderful read for younger children who are may be confused with what senses are or why we have them.

This book is one of a series of 5 books about the senses. This book is very descriptive. It describes the way foods feel in our mouths and it mentions that different foods taste better at particular temperatures. Ice cream is better cold, but a hamburger tastes better warm. There is even a page about how animals taste things. The pictures are close up photos of different foods.

Personal Reaction -

I liked this book. It was a quick book that was very basic for young children. The photographs showed a lot of detail and they were very colorful. I liked how there were questions on some of the pages, so it was an easy conversation starter to discuss the senses with the children.

Classroom Extension Ideas -

- I would use this book with a unit on senses. The kids could write a paragraph describing their favorite foods, textures to feel in their mouth, and tastes that they like.

- I would bring salty, sweet, and sour foods for the children to try. I would also bring soft and hard textured foods. We could read the book first and then sample the different types of food ( )
