Abstract: The newest addition to the Weight Watchers Program, the Quick Start Plus program, is introduced in this cookbook, along with more than 500 recipes that can be used to adapt the program to a variety of personal lifestyles. The phased food plan that forms the basis of the Quick Start Plus program is outlined, and menus suitable for the first four weeks on the plan are provided. Exchange lists identify foods in each of the major food groups that are nutritionally similar and that can be substituted for one another when planning menus. An "optional" exchange group includes sauces, dips, and toppings that are allowed in gradually increasing amounts as the food plan progresses. Recipes are organized by food exchange: fruit, vegetable, milk, bread, fat, and protein (eggs, cheese, peanut butter, dry beans and peas, poultry, veal, meats, liver fish). "Personal Choice" food selections (cheers, Sweet dreams, eye openers, holiday magic) are offered to help make weight control efforts more interesting and enjoyable. I got this cookbook not because I was planning on using the Weight Watchers program (which I've heard has changed a lot since this book came out) but because I wanted something that could give me meals and dishes that were, shall we say, the opposite of Paula Dean. Portion controlled, and not full of things that fill your arteries with goo. I have to admit I haven't used it much over the years, and absolutely nothing will ever get me to eat liver. However, it's staying on my shelf because maybe... And one thing can be said for Weight Watchers--it's not a fad diet. It's the epitome of healthy and sensible. ( )
