Set in a post-apocalyptic future rules by angels, this story follows the crew of the Black Armada, a band of pirate who are distributing banned books.. Enter Bryony, a god with healing powers, and Shakespeare, her crow, who are seeking refuge. I loved the concept of this book. The world was such an interesting one! I loved the characters bonding over their shared love of books (great to see as a bookworm!). It had some absolutely spectacular lines (seriously, go look at the first ones!). I loved Bryony and Shakespeare although I wasn't that fond of the fact that their relationship was used as a way to state information. Even so, I was a little confused at times but I'm sure a lot of this will be cleared up later in the series. I'd recommend this book to those who are interested in a pirate based fantasy romance! Humans can turn into gods by gathering worshipers.
At first, I had a little trouble getting into the story. It took me some time to figure out the basic setting of this world. It took me as much time to warm to Byony, the main character. While the characters are likeable enough, I never got truly sucked in, and at time I had trouble keeping some of the characters apart. I saw some of the plot points coming well ahead of time. So in summary, I would call this a nice read, but not necessarily a "you have to read this" book. I'd probably pick up the next one in the series though, to see where the characters are headed. Bryony and her crow, Shakespeare, find themselves onboard the Black Armada with a plan to find a sword. But this plan falls apart when Bryony learns the information she knew might be incorrect. This is an adventure and romance story between Bryony and Michael, who both had bad first impressions of each other. The story follows Bryony and her perspective, but there are many characters involved in the adventure. I received a free copy and am leaving a review voluntarily. Bryony Moss didn’t plan to become a god, but accidents happen, and giving up immortality once you have it is easier said than done. Convinced her life is in danger, she infiltrates the crew of the infamous Black Armada with plans to dispatch their godhunter before she is discovered. But all her plans begin to unravel as soon as she learns the truth. To top it off, she seems to be falling for the flagship’s navigator, a kind but isolated giant named Michael. Godhunter was a wonderful book. The world was interesting because it feels like it takes place in the past, but it is actually set in the “post-apocalyptic” future after a plaque kills off a large portion of humanity. I liked the character of Bryony but wished the story included more about her back story and her transition into a god. I enjoyed the found family aspect of Bryony’s time on the Black Armada. The chemistry between Bryony and Michael was well written and endearing. A large part of the story is about Bryony as she struggles with her status as a god, her immortality, and the morality of doing away with the godhunter. The book ties up in a way that doesn’t leave you on a cliffhanger, but with enough open questions that makes you eager for the sequel. The storyline is different and exciting. I loved all the characters. Overall, this is a great first installment in a new series.
