More characters in the world of ASOIAF. What's a few hundred more? ( )

If you like Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series, the Hedge Knight stories are worth reading. The first is my favorite. Plus, they spark all kinds of different theories about the main series. ( )

Set a century before the events in A Song of Ice and Fire/> (a.k.a. the source material for the HBO TV-series Game of Thrones/>), this short story recounts the adventures of a hedge knight who enters a tournament and along the way makes some powerful friends -- and enemies.

It is a deceptively simple tale, full of the kind of details George R.R. Martin loves to sprinkle throughout his Westeros-based books. But it pays to overthink these kind of stories (this is merely the first, two more have followed since its publication), because Martin has his reasons to describe precisely this event. Just imagine if this tournament had turned out differently... (and that is all I'm saying).

This is the comic book version of that short story. Unfortunately the artwork isn't that great, and of course you are missing the subtle touches in Martin's penmanship, so it is debatable whether this really deserves four stars. Consider that score to be mainly based on the strength of the story itself, less so on how it is executed here. ( )

My first graphic novel. It was fun! And it was cute. Well, it was cute when it wasn't gross at least. It was something different for sure. Not a format I want to read too regularly.. But it is something I will pick up in the future, to change it up every once in a while. I will no longer fear graphic novels; I'm no longer a GN virgin.

The story was interesting, the artwork was well done. Not much else to say. Four stars. ( )

I'm really not a comic fan but this was OK. ( )
