Deep in the heart of greenest Pennsylvania lies the town of Blackgale. It is a place of great wealth, rustic charm and natural beauty, as well as diligent, hardworking citizens. Bright, inventive girls are especially prized, and are molded into brilliant young women at the world-renowned Blackgale School for Girls. Cordelia Paredes is not, decidedly, the ideal Blackgale citizen. She is a fifteen-year-old delinquent who is on the verge of dropping out of the Blackgale School for Girls, and harbors dreams of fleeing to somewhere that's less of a perfectionist headache. But then, one day, her best friend Persie just ... vanishes. Poof. Gone. No warning whatsoever. And if that isn't bad enough, all of Blackgale's residents - from teachers, to local officials, to Persie's own parents - are oddly unconcerned. Consequently, Cordelia must take it upon herself to find Persie, digging not only into Blackgale's mysteries, but into the personal stories of the little town's most mysterious residents. As more secrets are uncovered, formerly affable friends and neighbors start to turn hostile, and, in some cases, even murderous. Will Cordelia be able to discover what happened to Persie, or will her efforts lead to nothing more than a premature demise?… (altro)

I enjoyed this book a lot. It keeps you guessing and has quite a bit going on. I am not a young reader and I enjoyed it, I can see how kids would as well. You’re taken to many different places and meet good and bad characters along the way. The mysteries mount and I can see this being a successful series.

I really enjoyed this book. A great rollicking adventure that felt a bit Lemony Snickett-esque. The main characters are teenagers so I’m not sure if this story was aimed a a 50-something but I enjoyed it none-the less. I was a little confused at first trying to work out if the story was set in a different time or different earth as the town of the book had many non normal things going on. In the end I just decided to accept the town and its creatures, different schooling, transport etc.
I look forward to the next instalments of the adventures of Cordelia, Maximelian and Ottoline. ( )

LibraryThing Earlier Reviewer Book. Wow. That was action-packed! I found it very fun and adventurous, however, there were times I felt like it was a bit too much. I wish I would have written down all the names of people/creatures as they popped up because I was finding myself saying, "What/Who was this again?" Saying that I did enjoy reading the book. I really liked the writer's way of writing. It seemed to flow really well and I found myself often saying to myself, "I know exactly what they are doing!" or in awe that someone could describe a scene so well that I could imagine it as if it were happening to me at that moment. I could see this as a fun film for children and adults alike. The book does have some descriptions of violence while on the other hand, it does have some life lessons tucked in between its lines. ( )

What a great start to a series! Love the characters - especially the love/hate/love relationship between Cordelia & Ottoline. I'm looking forward to learning more about the stories behind this world and how Persie, Cordelia, Max, & Ottoline will cope with the new things coming their way as they also navigate teenage life, and all that entails.

I enjoyed this book. There was a lot of things going to keep things interesting however, it did seem like too much at times. I also couldn't really tell who was the target audience. Some parts read a bit more like young adult and then the next paragraph would read like middle grade. That threw me off but overall it was a fun read. ( )
