I was prepared to love this adaptation of Wells's classic sci-fi body-horror, and the artwork and colouring is wonderful. However, trying to squeeze the body of Wells's novel into two standard comic books required too many amputations, and sadly the end result was poorly stitched together. Fully 50 pages of the collected hardback was flayed of its coloured-and-lettered hide and pared down to its pencilled bones, presented as an extra, juicy morsel, but couldn't bandage over the gutting of the narrative, and added to my relief at having borrowed not bought it. The final panel was a cut above, though, with a neat Darwinian allusion.
Low pick, but bears repeating that the artwork is fantastic. ( )

This is just a gorgeous adaptation, with the bulk of the heavy lifting down to Gabriel Rodriguez's absolutely stunning artwork. Seriously, this guy just seems to get better and better.

The story is somewhat truncated from the original, and Rodriguez and Adams do take some liberties with the plot, but I can't say I didn't love the new ending, because it's well done, and the adjustment of the gender for Prendick was also handled very well.

If I have any complaint whatsoever, is I would have like to have seen it spread across a full three issues. I think the story could have had a bit more time to breathe.

But, overall, there's just so much to love here. ( )
