The individuals featured in this volume are not claimed as necessarily representative of the unemployed population as a whole during this time, rather they were those who the authors were able to make contact with, who were willing to participate. Nevertheless, we see a range of ages, backgrounds, ethnicities, and professions (mainly working, but some more middle class). The reasons individuals became out of work range from industry-wide changes driving redundancies, to individual obstinacy, personality clashes, indifference to the job, and injury, among other things. We get a look into the daily struggle of making ends meet, and eroding cycle of job application and rejection. The welfare system as it was in the 70s comes across as almost Kafkaesque – opaque, needlessly complicated, contradictory, capricious, and sometimes punitive. What a shame we only see one side of the story here. Nevertheless, this is an honest and sympathetic look into the lives of an otherwise overlooked segment of the population normally lacking in voice, and manly of the reflections, and problems, are very relevant in current times.
A worthwhile read for anyone interested in society as a whole, politics, and economic and educational challenges facing the population. ( )
