I do like Lagace’s art, which is probably why I keep reading Menage a 3, but where that series has sexy hijinks to keep things interesting, this book includes more than one scene where a character explains backstory to another character who already knows it in an awkward info-dump. The most interesting thing in this series is the revelation that the main character’s mother sold her daughter’s soul to save herself, but the story around it is limp and graceless. Exorsisters, Vol 1 from Ian Boothby is a fun read that actually has a good story. I wasn't sure how I would feel about this one when I read it (which was a while ago, so I don't remember details) but ended up getting completely caught up in it. The story about who and what they are was interesting, their actual adventures were great, and it left me wanting to read more. The artwork added to the story at almost every turn, not too much but always enough. Adding to what was happening without being distracting. Kate and Cate are perfect together, as they probably should be considering who they are, almost total opposites but enough alike to keep goals and objectives in sight, barely at times. The humor and snark was a frequent part of the story but it did not detract from any tension in the narrative. If anything, it just made it more fun. I highly recommend this and think that it easily spans readers from those who like dark stories to those who like humorous fun stories. It has it all in just the right proportions. Did you sign a deal with the devil? Has a loved one been dragged to Hell? Then Kate and Cate Harrow should be the first ones to call for timely soul removal at a reasonable rate. The first story arc introduces you to a world where the Harrows have to deal with the end of the world, fallen angels, demon worshipping ex-boyfriends, and their Mother. Collects EXORSISTERS #1-5. Cate and Kate are in the business of dealing with supernatural fuckery, specialising in reclaiming lost souls from The Pit and giving a demon or two a kicking for good measure. Their mum sold their soul when they were kids (family, amirite?!) or rather Cate's soul that took on a rebellious life of its own, Kate.
That's the premise. The style is classic comic in the tradition of Archie, Betty, Veronica, and Sabrina with a modern twist, which suits the irreverent and infectiously fun tone perfectly. They pop in and out of hell (and demon orifices [orifi?]), angels rain from the sky, shadows are going to wipe out all life. All standard fare for the teen spoopy storytime, but there's just something special and fun about the Exorsisters style.
This really is a testament to crafting something new and fun from familar parts. I absolutely need to read more! ( )
