This first volume, in my opinion, is a near perfect story. It’s a horror crime thriller with a solid plot and great pacing, populated with wonderful character archetypes plucked from the supernatural noir genre that bred it. It has a self-contained story line, but it expertly weaves in a larger plot and perfectly sets up the next book. At 66 pages it’s a very quick read and it leaves you hungry for more. I absolutely cannot wait to join Mallory Hope’s further adventures in the next release!

An occult detective story that wouldn't be unusual in Vertigo's late '90s line up, this leans heavily on the tropes of detective stories but has enough quality and new ideas to pull it off. A flawed protagonist with a traumatic past (of course) investigates the disappearance of a child star and gets involved with various murky characters along the way. The black and white art by Jimmy Broxton is very good and uses a number of classic Hollywood actors as reference. This was originally serialised in 2000AD, where it suffered from a mid-series break. It is far better collected. Well worth reading. ( )
