In this essential handbook; a blend of Rich Dad, Poor Dad and The Happiness Project; the co-host of the wildly popular InvestED podcast shares her yearlong journey learning to invest, as taught to her by her father, investor and bestselling author Phil Town. Growing up, the words finance, savings, and portfolio made Danielle Towns eyes glaze over, and the thought of stocks and financial statements shut down her brain. The daughter of a successful investor and bestselling financial author of Rule #1, Phil Town, she spent most of her adult life avoiding investing; until she realized that her time-consuming career as lawyer was making her feel anything but in control of her life or her money. Determined to regain her freedom, vote for her values with her money, and deal with her fear of the unpredictable stock market, she turned to her father, Phil, to help her take charge of her life and her future through Warren Buffett-style value investing. Over the course of a year, Danielle went from avoiding everything to do with the financial industrial complex to knowing exactly how and when to invest in wonderful companies. In Invested, Danielle shows you how to do the same: how to take command of your own life and finances by choosing companies with missions that match your values, using the same gold standard strategies that have catapulted Warren Buffet and Charlie Munger to the top of the Forbes 400. Avoiding complex math and obsolete financial models, she turns her father's investing knowledge into twelve easy-to understand lessons. In each chapter, Danielle examines the investment strategies she mastered as her increasing know-how deepens the trust between her and her father. Throughout, she streamlines the process of making wise financial decisions and shows you just how easy; and profitable; investing can be. Capturing a warm, charming, and down-to-earth give and take between a headstrong daughter and her mostly patient dad, Invested makes the complex world of investing simple, straightforward, and approachable, and will help you formulate your own investment plan; and foster the confidence to put it into action.… (altro)

The good:
- Good primer on value investing
- Easy read
- Doing the maths exercises really taught me something
- The personal narrative added a nice touch and made the book easy to read from cover to cover

Why only 3 stars:
- Sells false hopes: 15% return annually
- Authors not transparent about own performance (only one example with Whole Foods)
- 15 min. a day - too good to be true: after doing the exercises, valuing companies takes lots of time.
- guru-ish ( )

- rock-bottom beginner level
- this book is about dealing with anxiety, burn out, family problems and lack of self-confidence and not just investing
- the math parts are oversimplified and require the use of a technical calculator. *shudders
- all investing-related text could have fit on 10 pages.
- first book on investing that explicitly links personal values with stockpicking, but I would have loved to see more examples than just Whole Foods
- the author’s resistance to be taught and irrational fear of personal finance and numbers irritated me, but other people might be able to relate to that ( )

This had a lot of good information on how to invest (their special way), but I feel like it’s more problematic than not. I’m not fond of anyone being the end all ultimate here, and their gurus didn’t wow me (& of course Charlie Munger is in the news this week for creating a student housing monstrosity at UCSB and pulling an Isabella Stewart Gardner if they don’t stick to his plans). I’m not sure if the author understands her privilege at even having enough money (she never talks her own numbers) to be able to invest, but her “I’m just like you” stuff feels disingenuous. I think I benefited most from the how to research aspect of things but feel rather off about everything else. ( )

Very dramatic. It's like watching poor drama on TV. Doesn't always stay on topic to make it more entertaining. ( )

With Invested by Danielle Town and Phil Town we find that even if you are a successful lawyer you can still have bills to pay that completely wipe out your paycheck. Watch as Danielle goes from not knowing about inflation to being able to pick and choose her own stocks. Her journey is an interesting one since I am attempting to learn about Investments myself. I don’t want to be doing what I am doing for the rest of my life and I would like to be able to retire. However, the company I work for doesn’t have stock options or a 401k plan or anything like that. This means that I have to dive into the deep end of figuring out how to invest all by myself.

A while back, Danielle figured she needed to do something about her finances. So she called her father, Phil Town, who just so happens to be a successful investment guru. The man wrote a book about it, so I imagine he would know things. That is what spawned this book. All you need is one year of focused study and you too can learn how to invest with the best. Now I don’t have one year, I only took this book out for three weeks, so that will have to do.

The book is divided into chapters that correspond to months of the year. Each month has a specific set of tasks that must be done in order to understand the world of investing. So for January, the main task is to overcome your fear of the market. Things like Stock Market Crashes happen all the time and are useful to prune out inferior companies or companies with outdated models and practices.

So in that sense, the book is quite good and told me a lot of what to look out for. I guess now the only problem is actually doing it. There is a ton of advice packed in this book. It might take a while to digest all of it. ( )
