Fiction. Literature. Suspense. Thriller. HTML:"Kimberly Belle delivers the goodsâ??a rocket-paced story with a heart that will keep you riveted through every hairpin twist and turn. Breathless suspense!" â??Lisa Unger, New York Times bestselling author of The Red Hunter
When a child goes missing, two mothers' lives collide in a shocking way in this suspenseful novel from the bestselling author of The Marriage Lie.
It's every parent's worst nightmare: the call that comes in the middle of the night. When Kat Jenkins awakens to the police on her doorstep, her greatest fear is realized. Her nine-year-old son, Ethan, is missingâ??vanished from the cabin where he'd been on an overnight class trip. Shocked and distraught, Kat rushes to the campground, but she's too late; the authorities have returned from their search empty-handed after losing Ethan's trail in the mountain forest.
Another mother from the school, Stef Huntington, seems like she has it all: money, prominence in the community, a popular son and a loving husband. She hardly knows Kat, except for the vicious gossip that swirls around Kat's traumatic past. But as the police investigation unfolds, Ethan's disappearance has earth-shattering consequences for Stef, as her path crosses with Kat. As the two mothers race against the clock, their desperate search for answers reveals how the greatest dangers lie behind the everyday smiles of those they trust the most.
Don't miss bestselling author Kimberly Belle's next deeply addictive thriller, The Personal Assistantâ??where she explores the dark side of the digital world when a mommy-blogger's assistant goes missing!

This is earliest Belle book I have read. It was fine, but it also showed me how she has clearly improved in her craft.

Here we have an 8-year-old who disappears from an overnight class trip. His parents are divorced, there is a restraining order, his mom is struggling financially, everyone assumes dad must be involved somehow. But where is the boy, and how was this done?

Belle has some of her tricks here--kids doing kid stuff that adults/police don't consider or even imagine. Characters who are both good and flawed, and so hard to root for or against. Good seeming characters who are mostly flawed. Her minor characters get more time and more detail than many authors give.

That said, the solution here was obvious--the foreshadowing is foretelling, the story just becomes a way to explain the why and how.

The Hoopla audio also had some issues--what I think were redone/corrected bits were inserted in (with a different actor?) and were obvious cuts because of ambient noise on the recordings. Not a huge deal, a bit jarring but not unexpected on an older work from early in an author's career. ( )

An easily-read thriller that does not outstay its welcome. Predictable but carried by likable main characters. ( )

    A good story.
    Really well written.
Very clever the way things connect together.

Kat Jenkins has let her young son, Ethan, go on an overnight field trip with his class. When she wakes up in the middle of the night to the sound of a policeman pounding on her door, she prays it has something to do with her ex and not their child but that's not the case. Ethan is missing. The authorities have come up empty-handed and the search dogs have lost his scent in the mountain forest. Another mother, Stef Huntington, whose child is in Ethan's class and on the same field trip doesn't know much about Kat but her son's disappearance affects her own life in a big way.

I really liked The Marriage Lie and I enjoy Kimberly Belle's writing so obviously this book was good! I was hooked from the very first page. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. What happened to Ethan?! Lots of suspense and tension. I did see some things coming a mile away, and it did start to unravel for me towards the end, but overall this was an entertaining read that held my attention and had me looking forward to when I could pick it back up. I liked reading from Kat's perspective as well as Stef's and I liked how they were woven together. I can't wait for more from this author. ( )

Do not start this book at night....it will have you up till early hours in the morning! This book hooked me from the beginning, and kept me thinking about it. Ms. Belle has a gift for writing. She makes you see everything that is happening very clearly with her gift of the descriptive. Characters are flawed, some likeable and some frustrating. As a parent, this book was hard to read due to a child missing, but also the underlying bullying. Other situations in the book are realistic and well thought out.

I received an advance review copy of this book from the Great Thought's Ninja Review Team. All opinions are my own. ( )
